I think good and bad memories make us the people we are today, everything we do, we learn from it.

It's not possible to erase such things from the memory. If you try to ignore them or push them away they will come back stronger and with more pain.
It is far better to get professional to help you to look at the trauma and learn how to cope with what happened. They will help you to understand whats going on and how to look back on it in a different way. They help you to deal with your emotions along the way. Eventually your mind will start to store these events in the correct part of the brain as a memory which you can recall when you want to and not it control you.
I tried ignoring what happened and went back to work and back to my normal routine, but ended up breaking down and it is taking a lot longer to sort it out

You can't really. One of our defence mechanisms is to try to block things out that are too painful. In extreme trauma, this MAY happen.
The only way to make the memory not painful is to face it head on. Let it come at you, grieve and cry. The constant thoughts are actually helping you to come to terms with whatever happened. If you don't travel this journey of pain, it will fester inside you, then can explode out when something else happens...even something which would usually be quite trivial.
I'm not suggesting that you sit and wallow and think about it all the time, 'cos that wouldn't be healthy and it's good to provide yourself with distractions. But in order to move on the pain has to be gone through.
An analogy would be : Imagine a woman in labour....the pains start off by coming every 20 minutes or so, she has to get through each wave of pain in order for birth to occur. Grieving is like this in a way, each wave of pain, each time you cry brings you closer to contentment.
I hope that helps

I really never could find a way to deliberately erase a memory. But if you don't dwell on the bad memories and instead think of the good ones- and make more good ones- the bad ones will fade.

sometimes when somebody experiences a traumatic thing then they repress the memory, and genuinally dont remember anything...but the mind will only do this if the memory is so painfull, that you wouldnt be able to cope with it.
So id say, when we have bad experiences they make us stronger people.... you will learn to live and deal with it.
what doesnt kill us makes us stronger :)

you could try hypnosis or hitting your head really hard(on a wall or something...)!
no,just kidding.don't do that,it will traumatize you even more.
i think, that you can't erase such things, from your memory.you just learn how to live with them and just try to get over them(see the happy things around you).
things like that, teach you,how to become ''stronger'',and make you,be more careful in the future.
as i said, you learn how to live with them and see the good side of the ''story''(if there is one)
