I believe you are refering to a pulpotomy where the nerve of the tooth is removed from a tooth due to an abscess. It's not a surgical procedure to do this though. First your given anesthesia to numb the area as best as possible. Abscess teeth are difficult to numb due to the infection in the area. But sometimes it can be drained a little, or you are placed on antibiotics to clean it up so the anesthetic will work. After the numbing the Doctor will remove the decay, and from the occulsal surface of the tooth he will open the tooth exposing the pulp or nerve chamber. Then he will use small endo files (that have tiny fine teeth all up and down them) and slide them into the canals, with an in and out motion, removing the nerve and scraping the walls of each canal (usually 3-4 canals in molars and 1 in front teeth) with the file, as he keeps enlarging the file to increase the size of the canal. The purpose of this is to make sure there is no nerve tissue left in the canal and also to enlarge it so it can be filled with a permanent root canal filling. Now with just the pulpotomy, they will take some x rays with the files in your tooth to makes sure they are getting all the way down the tooth to the apex and not leaving any nerve that could cause you pain again. Once they are sure of the measurment they will place a small medicated cotton pellet on the tooth and a temporary cement to cover the tooth until you proceed with the root canal treatment and later the crown with possibly a post and core build up being placed.
Hope I've been of some help in answering your question. Good luck with the procedure if it's you having it!

Apicectomy perhaps?

It involves cutting a small flap of gum over the top of the tooth root, removing the infection and also sometimes the root tip (apex), then sealing to prevent re-infection. The gum is then sutured back into place.
