Is that normal? I have never seen a cat pant before... He has plenty of food and water, and our house is kept at 65 degrees. Could be be overheating because of his coat?

Yep! Someone told me my cat was a Main Coone. It must be the bread.

My sister's cat is a Maine Coon and tends to pant when she's playing. Maybe it varies by breed?

I'd say the difference in upkeep is large. Cats with both coat types shed a whole lot, but long-haired cats usually have a lot more and bigger hairballs. Also, if you don't want their fur to be a matted mess, you have to brush and comb their hair almost daily. Some cats enjoy this, but some don't. The one semi-longhaired cat I had looked like he had dreadlocks half the time, even though I did brush his fur frequently. I tried to convince myself he was a Rastafarian cat, but the cat himself didn't seem to enjoy having his hair in knots. It's short-haired cats for me from now on.

The only time I've seen cats pant is when they're ill, stressed out, or seriously overheated.

I think you should call your vet about it, and take him in to be checked out, to make sure he's allright.

Sounds like you have some sort of wildcat like a Lynx or Servo or something. Larger cats of that type do tend to pant. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm really interested to know what type of cat you really own. E-mail me.

PLEASE, take your kitty to your vet to be checked!!! CATS DO NOT PANT! They "huff" to take in smells better... but panting after playing is a sign of not getting enough oxygen! I know from sad experience...have your kitty checked pronto! Lots of Love

Let him rest a few minutes before playing again. He should be fine.
