I don't have a problem taking her outside to potty. I am worried about her getting parvo.

Hi Vicki W!!
Your 11week Yorkie CANNOT go outside yet he is NOT FULLY VACCINATED.

The disease is caused by a highly contagious virus that is transmitted mostly by dogs orally contacting infected feces.Incubation period varies from 5-10 days.As in many viral diseases of the intestinal tract, some dogs can pick up the disease and shed the virus without significant symptoms in themselves. If you take him outside don't let him walk on the ground.

The parvovirus can linger in the environment for many months, allowing it to affect other dogs. It can withstand common household disinfectants (except bleach) and can withstand freezing winter temperatures. It can be spread on the hair and feet of dogs, in addition to shoes, clothes, and eating utensils.

Therefore, you will take him outside and let him walk and do his business there when his immune system is strong enough.

Thanks, Jason Homan

If you only take her to areas where you know there have been no other dogs, or dogs that are healthy and either immunized or have had titers, there should be no worry. Keep on schedule with her shots, of course. Socializing her now - before she reaches 14 weeks - is exceedingly important. The risk of developing behavior problems due to lack of socialization is much greater than the risk that she will get sick.

I wouldn't take her to anywhere too crowded though ( e.g. dog parks ) until she is a bit older. I got my puppy at 11 weeks and that is what i was told by my vet. He said vaccines normally take a few tries to start working. so by 4 or 5 months she should be fine.

Make sure she is up to date with her immunizations and talk to your vet, he or she can tell you if you need to take further precautions, such as avoiding places where many dogs frequent, such as parks. (Personally, I'd never take any dog of mine to one of those "dog park" places where people let their dogs congregate and play.) I have a chihuahua and I've shared your concern, tiny puppies seem especially vulnerable to the dangers of the big outside world!
