I am looking to talk either for free or for cheaper to my husband that is in Iraq. I have used the Yahoo phone to talk to my husband and it lags so much that we never use it or when we do, we have to wait 10-15 seconds before we can hear one another. My question is....does Skype lag? Is it a good way to communicate with someone in Iraq? We want to be able to hear each other's voices.

Be aware that anything you use will lag a little due to the distance between you all.

I have used Skype to talk home, and usually it isn't that bad. It all depends on how many other people are using the same satellite feed. The bandwidth is limited, so the more people on it, the more lag. Overall, Skype is pretty good though, I've used it a few times to talk to the states while here in Iraq.

As someone mentioned, it depends on the connection. The more that use it, the more it will suck. Also, if your husband is logging on to different computers, it won't work because the skype program has to be installed on the computers being used to make the calls. If your husband travels alot, and has to log different computers to talk, it may not be an advantage. Vonage you can transport anywhere. My husband is an 88M (vehicle operator) and travels alot between FOBs, using the computers there to communicate with me. We currently use Vonage for our home phone number and we plan to add a line for husband's upcoming deployment and he will get the "stick" that can be easily portable.
