It is amazing how much mis-information is out there. Yes, Wicca("big"W") is a relatively new form of what we might call witchcraft (also called wicca small"w") pretty much fouded by Gerald Gardner, but the practice itself has been around eons, pre-dating Christ.
I am Pecti-Witan (aka Hedge Witch, not Wiccan) a "solitary" practitioner of "the Old Religion" (witchcraft), and have been for many, many years. The Pictish people are even documented in writing, back as far as around 650 C.E.
Being a "Witch" is nothing like what is portrayed in movies or on Television. There is nothing flashy about it. we are fairly simple people with "abilities" that everyone has, ours are just honed and utilized. Lots of research and practice. There is a lot to learn when you are dealing with herbal, mineral and candle magick.
I read tarot cards, rune stones and utilize a number of other "fortune telling" tools but would NEVER charge anyone for anything I do! Besides, I do not do "readings" or "cast spells" for others on demand. That sounds more like a con game to me!
My mother was a witch. she practiced in the 1940's, so it seemed to come naturally to me, as I believe that this is not my first life (nor the last) as a witch. I have always had a deep respect for nature and have an innate ability to communicate with animals. When I was very young my parents encouraged me to learn about all religions, so I did. Books are an excellent source, providing you get the right ones, there are some I would avoid. I prefer Scott Cunningham. But you can't get everything from books.
We have developed a thick skin, because even in this "advanced" civilization there are still those who believe we worship the devil (LMAO, can't worship something you do not believe exists), and would rather turn a blind eye to the world around them. Some will even admit that they think we should be burned at the stake! Ignorance knows no bounds. The only offense I take is from those who can do no more that recite from their bible or believe every negative thing that they hear. They shoud try opening their minds and maybe do some actual reading on what we are about that is not written by a Christian zealot.
By the was iriquisax, Christmas is substitution for Yule (aka Winter Solstice).

I'm not wiccan, but it is one of my favorite religions ever. The earth connection within it and the spirituality is amazing, I have always considered adopting it as my religion, I just never have.
::sigh:: One of the respones above mine has the sorry misconception the Catholic church put into effect so many years ago. Pagan and Wiccan cultures are peacefull religions based off the ancient practices of various "cults." These cults were not evil, they were also peacefull. The entire European continent before the introduction of Judisim, was pagan. With the formation of the Catholic church, and the attempted conversion of the pagans many symbols in the religion were demonized. Claimed to be evil and the practitioneers were killed etc...Needless to say many were convereted into Catholicism, while others continued worshipping thier ancient deities despite persecution.
Wiccan is (please correct me if I'm mistaken) based off (and when I say this, I mean it was an attempted reformation with modern adaption) of a religion formed thousands of years ago, known now as a "Mother Goddess Cult" they worshipped the earth as their mother and preformed "spells" etc... Now please note, this religion predates Christianity, and is thought to be as old as Judisim. So thank you people who say wicca is completely new...
So please don't call pagans and wiccans evil, thier far from it.
Tony C instead of basing judgment on how something sounds and then making a statement, please look it up, learn a little about it, and then at least make an educated statement.

My life partner is Wiccan (Correllian Natavist Church). I go to circle with him sometimes, and am helping his priest and his priest's superior with some things that are developing within the denomination.
I happen to be Christian (from a liberal and inclusive sect), but it seems to me that Wicca is a very positive and loving religion. A good wisdom tradition that does much for its members.
It is a good thing.

for the literalists who will go after the poor young man for his question. When you can disprove all the errors in scripture found in the "Bible" section (there are three menu choices under that section) at http://www.rebuff.org -- then maybe you will be qualified to question or attack someone else's faith, until then, have the common courtesy to shut up.

I think it is just a diversion from Christianity. How many Wiccans were there 30 or 40 years ago? It has become popular, because it's promoters are trying to undermine Christianity.
Another example of this is the synthetic holiday, Kwanzaa, which was invented in 1966 by a black college professor. Nobody would have ever heard of Kwanzaa, except that mainstream media began promoting it to the black community. It is supposed to by a replacement for Christmas.

I am an atheist. I believe that Wiccans, like everyone else, are entitled to believe as they like as long as they harm none. Stop worrying about offending others, as you are entitled to believe as you like.
I hate it when the Christians start screaming about Wicca being devil worship (not that all of them do, just the ones that do). I wish they'd read a book. They are entitled to thier opinions, but it seems to me that many harm others by foisting christianity on them whether they like it or not.
Christians: I don't care if you are offended by this, but if you have something intelligent to say, say it! I prefer healthy debate as a means to understanding. Just don't start driveling on about the bible and what it says, get your own opinions and discover what it means for yourself. Wake up! Your own leaders call you sheep!
Sorry. I get preached to a lot, so I am preemptive at times.
Wicca is a very green religion, promotes nature. I do like that about it....

I am Wiccan, although solitary, and I came to it because I felt that there was something more than just reality as we see it.
Vantado - Wicca was constructed from various sources, including very old cult practices, but it in itself is not ancient, and has only been recognised since the repeal of the Witchcraft laws in 1951.

I turned to paganism after my ex husband and I moved to his hometown. I had always held inert beliefs in the spiritual and in the duality that is paganism (man/woman, light/dark). You can't have one without the other, but according to the christian faiths, there is only light and anything else is evil. You can't have the good without the bad sometimes. That is what teaches us compassion. Anyways, when I started to see how ignorant the people I was going to church with were, even after trying out several over 7 years, I had had enough. I looked for something else when I left my husband and found my second husband who was a very good man. His family is pagan. They are upstanding members of their community and do alot of good. I've never seen them do anything that would make me question what they do. So I started asking questions, they loaned me books on any subject I wanted to read about. And I found the practice of wicca a very beautiful way to express what I have always believed. When you are a child, you believe in magic and fairies and spirits, but as we grow up we lose that train of thought, especially when the chrisian faiths tell us they don't exist. Some of us continue to believe in them. That is why I chose paganism/wicca.

I would have to agree, it's a lovely faith. Also, the Rede is probably one of the most clear how-tos for life I've ever seen. An' it harm none, do what thou wilt. Ethics are so deeply ingrained into real, true Wicca that it would be impossible for me to think of it as anything other than an ethical faith.

To me, Wicca is a made up religion. I guess they all are, but it seems silly in this day and age to still be making up religions, and this one is only 50 years old or so.
I do think that Jesus summed it all up when he said, Treat other People the way you Want to Be Treated. Wicca has nice principles, but why bother? You can have the principles without the 'theology.'
That's my opinion on Wicca, but my opinion of Wiccans is that whatever floats your boat and doesn't sink mine is just groovy.

I think Wicca is interesting. I had a friend who was a Wicca and he always wore the Pentagram to school. They don't bother me at all as long as they don't use black magic.
