I am in the process of getting my basement finish. I would like to know what color should i paint the walls and what type of carpet would go well. I was thinking of like a slate blue for the walls and gray/blue berber carpet. tell me what you think. Or should i just go with the safe white walls beige carpet? The basement is small and I may need to rent it out in the future. thanks a million

in agreement with the lighter colored walls, slate might be a bit dark for a basement, if you really love the color, do 2 walls with the slate, 2 walls with a lighter color in the paint swatch, in the same family. the gray blue carpet sounds OK, but it is true, the lighter the carpet, the more the stains will show, so choose carefully, you might consider the carpet tile option, you could alternate between 2 colors.
good luck

From experience, I found it best to put up sheet rock over the basement walls and then paint it. the reason being, is that the cement or cinderblock walls do get damp and will cause the paint to peel in a short time. Where it doesn't peel will become discolored. This is an inexpensive project to do for a do-it-yourself-person. If it is done by a contractor, it will pay for itself for lasting forever, unless your basement gets flooded. Chossing a carpet should compliment the color you paint and vise-versa.
If you find your basement walls get damp or wet after heavy rain, this could be corrected by removing the soil or sod away from the foundation about one foot deep. Making sure the soil or sod around the foundation is angled away from the house. Lay down heavy plastic on the dug out area and recover it making sure the soil and sod stays angled away from the house. This will prevent water from seeping in.

White walls, with cocoa brown carpet, because stains dont show as much on the carpet....... Or you could get totally wild with it, and do Maroon Walls, with Rose colored carpet! Or even Cocoa Brown walls, with dark chocolate carpet.....Then you really wont see the stains, while the people are living there insisting that you pay for their carpet to be cleaned every couple of years! However, the darker your colors, the smaller the room will appear....... So, you may want to ask a professional about what to use that will still make the room big enough looking but wont show stains on the carpet, as bad, or as soon anyway! Good Luck to you!!! Have fun with it!! Sounds like a Fun Project!! Smile!!!

The basement walls can be any color you wish. I have white, but because being in the basement I think I would go with a bright color to give off more lighting. The carpeting I would go with something not to think or long as you would want to make it easy to clean if nessary. Of course these are my thoughts.

Painting should be a light color something you could touch up with out spotting, carpet, HUM I'd believe I'd go with tyle, and later if you or they wanted carpet, it is in basement area they can jjust place it nicely fitted down, carpet in basement is trouble usuallly dampness sets in and it begins to smell. If you are going to rent it, you need something you'll not have to worry about such things as that, that's an up keep and you won't need that. But if you want carpet don't go light, you'll end up with traffice path for sure in no time . Renters are not particular as you would be on stuff, Good Luck!

If it is small go with the white on the walls and and industrial or commercial grade berber for longer wear.... If money is not an object - they have the 12x12 sections of carpet that are peel and stick.. they are quite cool and easy to install but spendy.
You can pick up color in accents - if you have base boards or chairrails you could paint them in an accent color.

Nice tan burber carpet is good. You can paint the walls a light blue something that close to white. If you go to dramatic and dark on the walls it will seem darker, and people might not want to rent. They want crisp feeling. I'd probably go with an off white on the walls though.

Paint it whatever color you like. For the carpet however, I suggest berber. It's durable and usually there are small fluctuations in the color (like specks, I guess) of the same color but in different shades, so it makes the room feel cozy whereas a normal carpet is just one flat color and not that interesting.

Any color YOU like, not what some one else likes and for a carpet I'd go with a commercial grade low pile rug, looks very nice and easy to keep clean. good luck
