I live in spain and have 2 boys, one is 8-1/2 years one is 9-1/2 years. My boys are very responible and very mature for there age, everyone comments on how well behaved they are at home and how well mannored they are. They are very inderpendant and help clean and cook, i beleive in teaching in the early stages of life so they grow into wonderfull inderpendant young men, every womens dream...! Anyway back to the question, what is the age limit for them to be left home alone at night for a few hours (max 5 hours) in spain??? I tryed looking on the net to no avil... They know ALL the rules and how to use the house phone also not to open the door, you name it they know it...

I do not believe that there's one answer to this question. This is one of those questions where you have to use your own instinct. If you feel like it is OK to leave them now for a few hours then that would be OK. I say this only if they do know about all the emergency numbers and all the things you mentioned above, But a little piece of my advice I would start out slowly. Go to the store and back at first and then the next time go grocery shopping. Just gradually work up to the 5 hour mark, because a lot could happen in that amount of time. Let the children and you get comfortable with being home without mom.

well I think they are still to young to be left alone and the age is 14 , I think. I too live in Spain & just the other day on the news a mother left her children at home as she had to work, her children were age 2, ,5,8 1/2 I think , she only has the eldest left as the house went on fire and the other 2 children died, so if you have to work , look for a sitter, or some other arangment .

Your boys are far too young for that, whether it's legal or not. Your priorities should be focussed on THEM, and not getting away from them for a night out - they are YOUR responsibility! Babysitters are a far better idea.
Imagine how any child would feel knowing that its mother was going to abandon them even for 'a few hours'? Imagine too how a parent would feel if they returned after 'a few hours' and something awful had happened. You would NEVER forgive yourself. Besides, are you sure you would be in a fit state to look after them on your return from 5 hours on the razzle?
It doesn't matter how 'independent, responsible and well-mannered' they are, they're still children and deserve a full-time, caring parent, which I fear you are not!
How can you even consider such a thing - I hope someone in the Spanish social services picks up on this and pays you a well-deserved visit!

I have an 81/2 year old and I would say exactly the same thing about him as you have about your boys but I would not dream of leaving him alone until he is about 12 at the youngest and then it will only be for a short time while I pop to the shop or something.I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened.
