A photodiode is in simplest terms an electrical switch made up from a junction of semiconductor materials that will allow electricity to pass when light hits it. Semiconductors are materials that can act as a conductor, or insulator depending on their characteristics. In this case the light acts to lower the insulating resistance of the junction.

A photodiode is a semiconductor diode that functions as a photodetector. Photodiodes are packaged with either a window or optical fibre connection, in order to let in the light to the sensitive part of the device. They may also be used without a window to detect vacuum UV or X-rays.

It is an electronic element that senses light. As a diode it blocks current. When the element is exposed to light it changes how much current it allows to pass through. Depending how it is configured it can allow current when it is exposed to light or it can block current when it is exposed to light.
