It's very obvious to me that we have to keep ourselves on guard and knowledgeable in the Word as not to be deceived from the basic foundation and principles of our faith in Christ. He is the Word and the Truth and the Way.

When paul wrote this to the church, there were some people teaching "another gospel" not the Gospel of Christ. These teachers were mingling falsehood with the truth. An example: The Sabbath(Saturday). The christian church claims that there is a Sabbath but it is now on Sunday. God did not change this Commandment, man did. So even today we have preachers teaching the tradition of men in place of the commandments of God. The Roman Catholic Church tried to changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, first by Constantine in 321A.D and then by church Doctrine in 538A.D. And the Protestants of today accept this spurious Sabbath even though protestants came from protesting against the Roman Catholic Church. The Protestants creed is "the Bible and the Bible only" yet they accept the Catholic tradition of Sunday worship in spite of themselves.
Keep your eyes open, this will be the big test before Christ returns. Isn't the issue over worship? Will you accept the Mark of the Beast(Sunday worship), or will you have the seal of God(Sabbath worship) written in your forehead? The seal of God is in the 4th. commandment. A seal contains the name(God), the position(Creator) and the dominion (heaven and earth).

To me it means that we need to be aware and wary of the world and the things of the world. As the old saying goes, be IN the world, not OF the world.
So I guess one of the many examples would be when someone cheats your soul by convincing you, through subtlety, temptation, or out and out lies to do something (whether small or large) that goes against the teachings of God.
Perhaps something like believing that a man/person can fix your credit problems if you send him/the company some small fraction of what is owed the credit card company.
Or a person who convinces you that it makes sense to not pay your taxes because you're just one person out of millions in the US and they'll never catch you.
Or even something smaller, and probably worse in the eyes of God, like eating grapes in the grocery store and not buying them at the checkout, or keeping the extra quarter, dime, penny, that the cashier gave you by mistake. Or not giving to homeless because you think "they'll just buy drugs or booze with it", or believing that you have to be loud and boastful about your beliefs in order for people to know that you believe and are faithful.
It's all of the things that draw us away from the Spirit and toward the devil that this verse is telling us to beware of.

The best way to spot a counterfeit is to become familiar with the real thing. That was Paul's recommendation for dealing with the false teachers he referred to in this letter. Paul noted that these false teachers based their philosophy on human tradition. Certain religious groups of Paul's day had long lists of rules an regulations. They urged people to neglect or abuse their bodies. They also promoted angel worship. Even today some teachers encourage similar practices. They captivate others with their religious zeal and mystical other-worldliness focusing attention on themselves as the ones who hold the real truth or some sort of supernatural connectedness. Faith only come from Jesus Christ He is the only way, and source of what you need spiritually

Anyone who tries to tell you something opposite of what God says. He is telling you to be on your toes because men come up with good philosophies and reasoning and make it sound so perfect that you may be deceived by it. Especially people who use the Bible and it's verses to try to convince you it means something other than it really does. He wants us to be cautious of these things so we don't get sucked into human deceit and stop believing on Him and His words which are the truth verses believing mans lies.

I read that one of the answerers said, people who teach that Jesus is not divine. I believe that Jesus is definitely divine. He is God's Son. The second highest being in the universe and the highest of all created beings. But no where does the Bible teach that Jesus is God Almighty. He is a mighty God, being God's Son. He is Lord and King, but he still answers to God, his Father. You don't have to believe in a trinity to believe that Jesus is divine. Of course he is. He is at the bosom position of God. But he was created by God. God was not created. He is the Creator.
There are many God dishonoring teachings in the world, and the trinity is one of them. Even though the holy spirit has a definite role in the Christian congregation, and one must recoginize what that role is. Without the power of the holy spirit no one could gain accurate knowledge of God and Jesus.
John 17:3: " This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ."
1 John 4:1: " Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world."
2 Corinthians 11: 12-15: " Now what I am doing I will still do, that I may cut off the pretext from those who are wanting a pretext for being found equal to us in the office of which they boast. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. 15 It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness. But their end shall be according to their works."
2 Timothy 4:1-4: " I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is destined to judge the living and the dead, and by his manifestation and his kingdom, 2 preach the word, be at it urgently in favorable season, in troublesome season, reprove, reprimand, exhort, with all long-suffering and [art of] teaching. 3 For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories.
