I want to make a yellow cake for Valentine's day, and love chocolat frosting on yellow cake, but would like to make it red.
So I guess the real question is... can you dye Chocolate frosting Red?

I don't know if you can dye chocolate but I'm sure you could find white chocolate and then dye it red.

Yes, you can use red food coloring to make the frosting red. Red Velvet cake is just a chocolate cake with red food coloring to make it red. This would be the same thing. It takes quite a bit of coloring to achieve a "red" color. This will only work if you make the frosting from scratch and use the food coloring as part of the liquid.

Red Cake Recipe
This red cake recipe with frosting comes from Doodles.
INGREDIENTS:
See instructions below
PREPARATION:
Red Cake
Posted by: Doodles
Mix:

1/2 ounce red food coloring 3 tablespoons instant cocoa 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon water (1/2 oz)

Cream:

1/2 cup shortening 1-1/2 cup granulated sugar
Add:

2 eggs
cocoa mixture
Beat well - Make sure it's all blended smoothly.
Add:

1 C. buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
2-1/2 C. sifted flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
scant teaspoon salt
Beat very well till smooth. Bake in greased and floured layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Test after 25 minutes with toothpick. Let stand for a few minutes before turning out. "THE" Frosting (not too sweet, but very good)

Cream:

4 ounces butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
Beat till very fluffy!

Then add:

3 tablespoons flour - 1 tablespoon at a time
2/3 cup milk, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla
Beat hard and long at high speed until very smooth and creamy and the gritty texture is gone. Trust me! You'll never make another frosting again. My sons are 37 and 40 and still request this cake and frosting. My grandkids are following suit. It is NOT low-fat or low-cal, but enjoying a very small piece now and then won't hurt.
Enjoy!

Red Velvet Frosting:
5 Tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup white sugar
1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cook flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly. (This will be as thick as paste.) Let cool until cold. Cream together sugar, butter, and vanilla; add to cold mixture. Beat until the mixture is the consistency to spread. When finished, it is similar to the likes of whipped cream. It makes the cake!

Nope, I have tried it. It does nothing to change the color. Do you like white chocolate? Maybe you can try adding food color to that?
