Does free reading give students good grades?

I'm doing a school article about if we should free read more often. Please site any statistics or information. Thanks!

With enough guidance and support from the teacher/s especially in terms of helping them develop habits of good readers, I do not see why this will not lead to good grades.

It will definitely improve the students’ thinking which I am always hopeful will translate into their grades. The more carefully planned "free" reading and learning opportunities we, teachers, give to our students, the better they become. More power!
