my sister will be 16 in the beginning of march. i hadn't been around for a few years but now we're talking and getting along fabulously. she's coming across state to see me at the end of febuary and i want to get her something special for her birthday showing her i care for her but also something she'd like. i know i'm giving her a poem i wrote... see below to read it and comment on that if you will. but what else would she like or any suggestions whatsoever?

you're my little sister
i started raising you when i was young
i was barely 6
you were just one
it was after the divorce
and mommy was gone
you needed a mommy
so i took her job on
i'd give you a bath
and put on your nightgown
i'd rock you til you were sleeping
then go lay you down
as the years passed
i'd teach you knew things
from drinking out of a cup
to pumpin you legs on the swings
you'd want matching clothes
so you could look like me
after mommy left
that's all i tried to be
i was a mommy a sister
and also a friend
and nothing will change
i'm here til the end
you've gotten older
you're no longer a kid
i've missed 3 years of your life
i can't beleive i did
mommy left long ago
then i did it too
i promised myself i wouldn't
it was so hard to do
i didn't even visit
til well after a year
i apologize for that
are you listening, do you hear

i'm sorry for leaving
but it can't be undone
sorry for being selfish
and that i had to run
that i ran away
when life seemed too rough
went i thought my duties
were getting too tough
i didn't really
have too much to do
just school and work
along with raising you
after i left
you had life decisions to make
i support your every choice
even if it wasn't the path i'd take
cuz it's your life
and it's yours to live
my support and love
is all i have to give
you can do anything
i have faith in you
when you think noone does
remember i always do
you'll always be my sister
no matter what you do
i'll always be here to listen
i'll always love you

Beautiful poem and what a wonderful thing you did, stepping in as a mother. I lived a similar life with a sister, 8yrs my junior, but my mother was there physically but not emotionally or mentally. Anyway, hard to say what to get her, as we don't know her. She's 16...maybe take her to have a manicure or a haircut or new hairstyle. Maybe print your poem out on a pretty piece of paper and frame it in a keepsake frame. Do something touching and something that says "You mean the world to me". Also, not sure of your finances, but a nice piece of jewelry would be nice, something "sisterly". Good luck and God Bless.

Before you give the poem to her...use your spellchecker and review your grammar. She'll be much impressed if you appear to be educated.
