You've gotten great answers for your question all are correct solutions. Another one would be monochromatic colors--on larger items like walls, furniture, drapes.
Below are some websites that discuss small rooms.

Well, you're not giving us much to go on here, but here goes anyway:

Use a neutral color (ostrich feather by sico is a good choice) Paint all the walls and the ceiling the same color. This will make your space appear larger.

Use mirrors. Lots of them. Not only do they reflect light, but they also reflect space so that makes everything appear larger too.

Use furniture that isn't oversized. Furniture that you see the legs on instead of having furniture with material going all the way to the floor will also open up your space.

Keep furniture away from the walls. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like it works, but it does! It really makes the room appear larger.

Try to stay with a monochromatic theme throughout the whole place. This will make your room seem larger.

Use airy window coverings. Leave table tops and other spaces uncluttered. Clutter will kill the size of your room.

Install small triangular shaped shelves in the corners of the rooms. Use plain particle board and small wooden dowels to make them. Paint them the same color as the walls and use these to display all sorts of things, even your stereo, boom box, television, etc. Keep the shelves from going all the way down to the floor. You can make them go very high up. Don't make the back part that touches the corners of the walls in a triangular shape: instead, chop off enough of the point of the triangle to allow you to run your wires in the back and down if you choose to put lamps, stereo etc. on the shelves.

Hang items on the wall that lead the eye up to the ceiling. This works great with large mirrors and paintings, etc. It makes the ceiling appear higher and the room large and airy.

Keep the floor clear of area rugs. Your floor space will seem much larger.

Give us more details and I'll be able to give you more tips.

Hope this helped!

Start by using all light or pastel shades of the color you choose; light colors open up an area; use glass top end tables, tables, of any kind, etc. this adds to the 'open' feeling..also any chairs should have an open back; if you have an upholstered chair, make sure it is in proportion to the size of the room; no gigantic piece that takes up half the room!! your drapes should be a light color also, and sheers, if that's practical for your climate, or at least something that looks 'light' on the windows and not a heavy fabric....You can use a darker flooring or carpet if you want, but beware that it will take away from the 'airy' open look you are trying to achieve...so keep the flooring as light as is practical for cleaning purposes; certainly no white carpeting!! your lamps should also reflect the proportion to the rest of the room, (no huge lamps!!) and obviously, no dark lampshades!!! only white or off white!! Hope this helps; feel free to email me if you have any further questions;....good luck!!

Hey :)

You will need to keep the space open and clear. Avoid clutter, such as magazines and shoes lying around - little things like that will make a small apartment seem smaller. Either stick to dark or light colors, don't try to combine the two, but deep reds will work nicely. Arrange furnature carefully - leave space, don't huddle stuff together, because it'll make everything seem squashed. Use a rug over the carpet or floor of a slightly different color, since this will trick the eye, and make it seem like there is more space. Use clever-storage to keep stuff easy-to-access but hidden away, and avoid putting up lots of shelves as this will make the room seem enclosed.

Good luck!

xx

Oh boy, tape a couple of days of HGTV (Home Garden Channel) and fast forward to all the shows they have on interior decorating. The ideas they come up with are unbelievable.
Mirrors (without big frames), uncluttered surfaces, unfussy window treatments, low-backed furniture. If you have one room for dining and living, specifically divide the two by your furniture arrangement. I'm a big fan of every piece of furniture having 2 uses. End tables are storage boxes or have drawers, the coffee table is a cedar chest. My lamps are hung on the wall - they show you how to hide the cord, but skinny floor lamps work, too.

Be very careful when painting to choose a color that does not close the room in. Keep your window treatments light and airy. Make sure your furniture is not to big in scale for your rooms. Try to keep as much clutter out of the way as possible. And mirrors are always a good trick.

cut out the clutter, use only pieces that make a statement. Simplicity is the key. Keep everything organized and clean. Use light colors to decorate and smaller scale furniture.

HEY HEY HEY

They SAY THE #1 Thing that makes a ROOM feel SMALL or BIG is the COLOR SCHEME of everything in the ROOM, not how MUCH stuff is in the room...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DARKER COLORS make a room feel SMALL!!!!

LIGHTER COLORS make a ROOM FEEL BIG AND WIDE OPEN...

MOST Decorators know this.

Look at it this way...

Standing in a dark forest with tall trees that block out the sun, are you going to feel like you are in a tight lonely place, or will you feel like you would in an open BRIGHT sun shiny FIELD with GREEN GRASS etc...

Light color schemes = BIGGER
Dark color schemes = SMALLER...
