they are extremely expensive to fix...

you can spend $1000 on minor stuff.
if you think that you can have a cheap luxury ride, just wait until something goes wrong on it.

Have it inspected by a mechanic ($50) and get a CarFax report before buying. It may be cheap because it was in a major accident or a flood. The price may be right, however. Check at kbb.com or nada.com.

The 740 is a great drive. With proper care, you should be able to get another 50-75k out of it. Please do not tell anyone about these being too cheap, as I am looking for one for myself. If everyone finds out you can buy one that cheap, the prices will start to go up.

It's cheap simply because it is a gas guzzler. In other words it has a large engine that consumes way too much gas. I wouldn't trust that it is mecanically sound with that many miles on it. Another thing to consider is that BMW parts and maintenace are very expensive. If I were you I wouldn't buy it.
