There is often a gap of time between when the filing of charges and the first appearance of an accused person in court. And because the Canadian legal system works on the presumption that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty, it is entirely possible that the accused person will be free to walk the streets because he or she has been able to post bail -- a deposit of money that is intended to guarantee that they will indeed appear for the trial.

Now, if this accused person appears ready to leave town and forfeit his bail, I'm sure the local police service or RCMP detachment would be most interested to hear about this. Also somewhere in the prosecutions branch of the Alberta Department of Justice (might be called to the Department of the Attorney General), there would be a prosecutor who would take much interest in hearing that an accused person plans to leave the jurisdiction.

Make those calls! Don't stop until you find the police investigator and the government prosecutor who are handling this case! As the saying goes, all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.
