I means that sometimes your principles can drag you down and it's better to take advantage of a situation than stick to those principles.

I don't happen to agree, but I think that's what it means.

Ok Listen ... Slavery is not a Christian principle, in fact it has nothing to do with religion, as you could find it in every religion. People those days did not see it morally wrong to enslave other men, and yes America ( just like Australia ) is founded on Christian principles, and it's gonna remain like that. I do not know if you are of Islamic faith, but too many Muslims these days question my countries ( Australia ) principles, and I am getting sick of it. You should be happy Australia has welcoed you in the first place an embrace these new freedoms , instead of what happens - you start foul mouthing the country in order to try and spread your ideologies. If you don't wanna fit into the society then leave, you have no right to try to change anything.
