I have a nine month old male kitty, and he's just as cute as a button (and purrs whenever you touch him). He just happens to be somewhat destructive! I have venetian blinds on the windows of my apartment, and he chews and plays with them, the string, and completly destroys the blinds! I have several blinds now that I can't close properly and that I'll have to replace when I move; I really need him to stop. He can't possibly be teething anymore...how do I get him to stop biting the blinds? He has plenty of toys around the apartment, as well as two other cats that he raises heck with playing constantly.

Update: Well...he's been fixed. And he has been sprayed. And we've tried making loud noises like clapping our hands (when he's woken us up at night with the noises of him chewing on the blinds slippers have been thrown at the wall to startle him.

He..well...is stubborn.

Yes, sadly, the blinds are plastic. We leave them pulled up, but occasionally he'll just go lean up to start thwapping at them. They were provided by the landlord and we're supposed to keep them the same kind, not switch em...

I'm gonna have to replace the darned things anyway before I move, so maybe I'll try replacing, and then try to BitterApple or double sided tape on the blinds when they're up. Thanks everyone; I've got some ideas now!

We've used a product called "Bitter Apple". It's harmless to pets, but tastes bad. You can spray it on the blinds and let it dry. Kitty won't bother them again. If he's particularly tenacious, you might have to spray them again in a few weeks.

I found Bitter Apple in the dog portion of my local pet store.

Run some 2-sided tape on the area of the blinds he's chewing on. Cats don't like sticky things either on their paws or to chew on. Then, if possible, raise the blinds all the way up, and wrap the cord around that top thing where he can't get to it. Since he's a silly kitten right now, he'll soon forget about this and find something else to play with. As he becomes an adult, one-at-a-time, you can try to lower the blinds and see if he will leave them alone. Now, if the blinds are covering all of the windows completely, raise them up about 1/2-way--cats love to see outside. Good luck.

Had the same problem. Just raise your blinds a little to let
your cat sit on the window sill and look outside. I keep my
blinds raised a little day and night to prevent this from happening.
It helps too to close the doors to rooms so your cat won't have
access. Has this particular cat been neutered or spayed?
Cats that have been fixed tend to calm down quite a bit. Hope this helps

My cat does the same thing, he bites the strings down to the very end, so when i close the blinds i lose the strings. When he was a baby he was on the window sill and got stuck in the cord and almost choked to death, so every since than he has bitten off every string in the house. Maybe something happened to your car you aren't aware of.

There is this product called Grannick's Bitter Apple spray (See link below) that works great for destructive chewing problems. Just follow the directions on the bottle and you're good to go! You may also want to try SSSCat (See below) although it may be difficult to mount it near the blinds.

Are your blinds made of plastic? My cat loves to chew and eat plastic. Try getting faux wood blinds, they look so nice and I don't think your cat can destroy them. Just make sure you keep the string up when your not using it.

I keep my blinds up at least half way because my cat Mia just loves to look out the window as do all cats. My cat even has a little ledge that she sits on to look out the window and at night after she thinks I am asleep she jumps up on her ledge and looks outside until she falls asleep. when she wakes up she look out until she falls asleep again.
so just try to lift the blind if you can( I don't know if you live in the city on the first floor and need the privacy or not) so he can look outside.

when ever you see him playing with the blinds you can either make a really loud noise and scare him or you could give him a little tap ojn the behind to show him that your the boss and u dont like that but you can only use these when you catch him in the act

I usually keep mine pulled up where he can't reach them and then tuck the string into the top of the blinds. Good luck my kitten destroyed mine!
