American Idol is not the fastest route to a career because 99% of singers don't make it past the first round. They are initially seeking out television personalities. You would have a better chance getting through if you intentionally did horribly on all the initial screenings.

There are three things that I know of you can try.
The somewhat cheesy way is try Karaoke and depending on where you live, you can look for places with an open mic night(anyone can come in and preform.) coffee shops and such. (not like Starbucks, smaller ones.) There are also places to record demos at for a small fee.

Community theater maybe, or open mic nights at a club. American Idol will be doing auditions again this summer, maybe you can go there. Good Luck!
