Because the IRS works in conjunction with other Federal Agencies, Including Banks to verify that a taxpayer doesn't have outstanding Fed Debts such as Student Loans, VA, Bankruptcies, Child Support. Also, because so many people get those "pre-file loans", the IRS has agreed to cross collect from one tax/loan provider to the next.
If your filing status has changed from the previous year or dependents claimed or dropped, it can be that your return is getting closer scrutiny.

Good Luck & Blessings

It is an estimate, they have to double check and make sure your taxes were completed properly, they don't want to over pay or under pay anyone on their returns. It normally takes 4- 6 weeks for the government to process your taxes. They want to make sure you don't owe them any money, back taxes, back child support, old student loan money. Also if they tell you that you'll get your money on Feb. 27 and you get it Feb. 20 you'll be happier then if they say Feb. 20 and you don't get them until Feb. 27, you'll be pretty mad.

If you filed for DD, it's possible that there is some sort of hold-up on your return. Normally filing this early will get you your refund in 2 weeks or less, often much less. Yes, the status on the website is just an estimate.

Only you can answer the question of if its going to be direct deposited.

The reason it takes so long is that the IRS is overburdened, while simutaneously being undermanned, especially at this point of the year.
