my 21 month old retreiver mix was on antibiotics for 10 days for a skin infection he had. a few days into the meds i noticed his stool loosing solidity. after completion of the meds he still had the runs and droops of blood in his stool, so i took a sample in to be tested and it came back negative. a day later he threw up a tiny bit, and that night he woke me up every hour to go outside with the runs. next day, he continued with the runs, and after consuming a bunch of water rapidly, he then began throwing up minutes later. i got him into the vet and he began vomiting bowel with more blood in stool as well, and they couldnt find anything on an xray. (he also has had an increasing loss of appetite over the past two weeks leading up to a complete loss of appetite the past 24 hours.) he had an emergency exploratory surgery and nothing was found in his stomache, intestines, etc.. he stayed in the ER last night and is back at the vet today... and ideas???? the docs are very confused..

he's been off the meds for almost a week now.. and yesterday was when things got really bad. they did check the pancreas, as well as the heart.. all of the organs seemed fine.. "beautiful" they said.. which made things so much more babbling.. they said they werent even interested in a biopsy because everything looked so great internally. he is staying in their care bc since his last visit on the 9th he has lost almost 10 pounds (most of in the last 3 days.. he is almost all skin and bones... they couldnt find any food in his system at all.) he will stay in their care until we find out exactly what is wrong and until he will eat on his own and wont need an IV to stay hydrated. he needs constant supervision and though he is down to 45 pounds, I am unable to carry him by myself with his incision running from right above his little manhood to the middle of his ribs. :(

oh.. and this am when i transported him from the ER the vet, the nurse mentioned something about parvo, but i think she was questioning whether or not the doctoer explored the possibility.

I know that antibiotics can make the stool loose, which sounds like what was happening. The blood in the stool could have been from the intestines being irritated due to the diarrhea.

Did the doctor put him on a bland diet? When a dog patient of ours has diarrhea, the doctor usually first withholds food for a day to give their system a chance to settle down. Then it's a bland diet of boiled chopped meat or cottage cheese with some boiled rice, given in small amounts throughout the day. He also sometimes gives Pepto (given by weight of the dog) to help settle the stomach. Throwing up could be just bile, which is probably because there's so much acid in his stomach.

If he had exploratory surgery, xrays, trips to the ER and it turned up nothing (I'm also assuming he had bloodwork), then there might not be anythign else to do but wait it out to see if it wasn't just a reaction to the antibiotic. Maybe it was just something that snowballed. It might not hurt to see if they did check the pancreatis for pancreatitis.

Prayers to you both, hope all turns out ok. Trust that he's where he needs to be, he can be taken care of and have the doctors moniter him closely.

Yes, it could be Parvo. I had a puppy who caught Parvo. None of the older dogs got sick. Vet, Now!! I just spoke with a friend traveling thru Utah. Vet there said they are having a Parvo outbreak. They are thinking it may be a new strain. Thought I'd share what she told me for anyone in that area. Sounds like whoever sold her the puppy needs to be contacted too. Vet bills for the kennel cough should be responsibility of the seller since pup came with it. At 8 weeks, pups can get sick and dehydrate pretty quickly. If it were my pup, I'd go to the ER vet tonight.

He won't eat because he's vomiting. It's an adverse reaction. When he stops vomiting he'll be more inclined to eat. He was probably allergic to the antibiotics that were given and you'll have to wait till it passes through his system. Keep him hydrated though. Don't let him drink to fast (that'll cause him to vomit).

Once he's eating SOLID food only his stool will become solid again. There is nothing in his system except liquid so there's nothing to form for a solid stool.

This is something you're going to have to wait out. He'll be okay.

Don't do any canned to coax him to eat - it'll continue to cause the loose stool. Just wet down his hard food a bit.

Good Luck

Wow...I hope all is OK. Antibiotics frequently cause loose stools, which, in turn, can be so irritating to the intestinal walls that bloody stools may occur. I'm sure you with held food to give his gut a rest and did every thing else you were suppose to do. Sounds very confusing, but it also sounds like you are doing everything you can and the vets are doing all they can. I hope everything ends up OK with your dog.

It looks like you're doing an excellent job in looking out for the animal and I give you thanks for that because alot of people aren't decent enough to watch out for their animal that much and you are so that makes you an awesome person!

To me, it sounds like a reaction to the meds. maybe she's allergic or have you read any side effects on them? Ask the vet if it could be the meds and if she's still on them take her off for a few days, see how it goes and if it continues, back to the vet.

Sorry I couldn't help much but I hope everything pans out.

hi
i had this with a lab and it was her pancreas they put her on metrodinzole. Also I had this problem with a pug and it was giardia. It dies before they can see it in the stool so they had to pull it and look at it under the microscope at the vets office, they die within 5 seconds of being out of the host so they have to look fast it was also medicated with the metrodinzole.

I would find another vet that can and will find out what is wrong with the dog. Fooling around with vets that do not have a clue can be fatal to your dog. Go for a second opinion and maybe they can find out what is wrong.
When people go to the doctor and they treat treat and treat without any results of getting better we go to another doctor, do that for your dog GO to another vet

I would try to give him a bland diet, when he starts to eat.
my lab had bad skin problems and I feed him Wellness Duck and Potato. It cleared up his skin, he was allergic to wheat. I think his stomack is upset from the antibiotics. Try feedind him just plain white rice, that will harden his stool. I hope he gets better!

If you haven't checked to see if it is parvo, then you need to do so ASAP... very life threatening for a pup or dog, this will make them vomit, have diarrhea with blood, it will also have a really bad smell to it, very bad smell. Good luck.
