Because many of them glean their knowledge of right and wrong from a book that supports beating slaves and stoning their kids to death.

Just because a person "knows" God does not make THEM God.
None of us (no matter how "good" or how hard we "try") will ever be free of sin on this earth.
Yes, people who know God may have a bigger understanding of what is right and wrong (particularly if they study the Bible) but this certainly does not guarantee that they will be "better" people. In some cases, I think the devil works even harder to make these people fail.
I think the "trick" for all of us, is to keep confessing and repenting, one "boo boo" at a time, day in and day out, and be more concerned with whether WE are following God than whether someone else is.

Christians sin because they are tempted, not only by Satan, but by our own nature as well. Sometimes, temptations will be so great that we choose to give in, instead of being strong and resisting. Becoming a Christian does not make one a god. It makes one closer to God and promised a place in the Kingdom of God at our departure from earth. There is only one perfect human that ever lived on earth--Jesus. Only Jesus was a sin-free human. He overcame all temptations, and He was tempted with the same temptations that we have. He never gave in to temptation. He remained strong to His death.
As far as being a Christian and knowing right from wrong--that is not limited to Christians. God supplied all mankind with this tool, it is called our conscience. It is the "voice" that tells you when you do wrong and right. If you do wrong, you feel bad. If you do right, you feel good.
Some shut their conscience out for so long that it becomes hard to hear it. That is called hardness of heart. If someone does this, yet claims to be a Christian, they need to check their salvation.
Remember, there is a difference in sin and practicing sin. When we sin, there are times that we don't realize it. If we became Christians and then God pointed out all of our sins at once, we would give up. We'd say, "I have too many sins to work on, there is no use in trying." God reveals our sins at the right time for us and Him.
Practicing sin is when you do something on a regular basis and you know you are doing it, but you don't want to give it up because it is "fun."
What some Christians don't realize is that receiving salvation does not give us a license to sin. We will have to answer to our sin, too. That will be the last humiliation we will feel, as Christians. It's like getting caught by your parents in a very embarrassing situation. You know you will be confronted by them for doing it, and you know that it will be one of the most awful times you deal with.
God knows that His children will sin. Sometimes our sin helps to bring the unsaved to God.

Two problems:
(1) Human beings are free, but subject to all sorts of complex social, physical, and psychological influences. It's a common experience that we "know" what we should do, but are unable to bring ourselves to do it, because of other contrary influences on our action besides our own will.
(2) Certainly one can know right and wrong without the God of Judeo-Christian monotheism. Some of the most perceptive and insightful ethicists belong to other traditions -- either pre-Christian European pagans (such as the Greek philosophers) or non-Europeans (such as Buddhists).
I would say rather that the concepts of right and wrong -- derived from a primal moral intuition common to all human beings -- are meaningless in the context of a reductive materialism. However, not all atheists are necessarily reductive materialists.

Jim says "Some suggest that without God we do not know right from wrong":
Jim, as a Christian I do NOT believe this to be true. If I do, then I am sitting in judgment of others and certainly not loving them. MG

We are created with a fleshly body & a Spiritual body. Both given free will, a choice, a illogical choice, but choice non the less. While we are still here in the flesh we fight the flesh& the flesh decays & corrupts, we do wrong. When we chose to transcend into our spiritual body, we connect with the Divine Creator, and we worship Him in Spirit & Truth, where within there is no wrong.

What a crock of horse poop that is. I grew up in a household where God and Jesus were never mentioned. I was taught some manners, to treat people good. Everyone says my father is a very kind man. People that say it would be impossible to know right from wrong without God are handing you a line, or they are self decieved. What a crock. Hahahahahah...

I don`t know what this will mean to you but let me put it this way, before I came back to religious belief I sinned freely and without any care for God or others,in fact it was fun most of the time, now I still commit a sin or two but it is not fun anymore nor do I enjoy it.

Those who know the God of the Bible do know right from wrong because the 10 commandments tell us how we should conduct our lives. Knowing right from wrong does not eliminate the fact that we are sinners saved by grace. As long as we walk this earth we will sin but thanks to the mercy and grace of God the Father we are saved. Praise God!

Everyone knows right from wrong no matter their religious status. The only difference between those who know God and those who don't is they have been forgiven of their sins.

Since all of our ideas about God spring from humans, it is absurd for anyone to argue that they have inside on what good/bad is because of a list God wrote up for them.
All of us have to figure out right/wrong and then we have to choose right or choose expediency. From their choices, you shall know their character.
