!40 square feet. You can actually prove to yourself by a simple trick: Take a graph paper and try out marking off the squares. By calculation also it is simple:

1 by 1 is 1 square
1 by 2 is 2 square
2 by 2 is 4 square

and so on. 14 by 10 or 10 by 14 is 140 square.

Depends on the shape of the area you're measuring.

A rectangular surface would have one side (length) at 14 and one (width) at 10. Area would be (length)x(width) = (14)x(10)=140.

A triangular surface would have one side (base) of 14 and the distance to the opposing point (height) of 10. Area would be (0.5)x(base)x(height) = (0.5)x(14)x(10) = 70.

Note that it doesn't matter which dimension is length or width inthe first case; you get the same answer. Similarly, for the second case, base and height could be either value.

Other shapes have other formulas; you just have to plug the two values into them (corresponding to the pieces you're looking for).

I don't know why this simple Q is asked?

To find area of any plain = length of that plain *Width of that plain.
In above case two sides have been given, that shows plain is of four right angles and measuring units is foot.
Hence area of given plain =14*ft*10*ft.
=14*10*ft*ft
=140ft*ft
=140 square feet
Hence 14 ft x 10 ft = 140 square feet.
