A bruise or contusion or ecchymosis is a kind of injury, usually caused by blunt impact, in which the capillaries are damaged, allowing blood to seep into the surrounding tissue. They often induce pain but are not normally dangerous. Sometimes bruises can be serious, leading to other more life threatening forms of hematoma, or can be associated with serious injuries, including fractures and internal bleeding. Minor bruises are easily recognized by their characteristic blue or purple color in the days following the injury.

I had a contusion from a car accident a few years back... mine was severe and it SUCKED!

When you bang a part of your body against something you can break blood vessels causing blood to leak out underneath your skin. The leaking blood might produce blotches or purple, green, blue, and black. That's called a contusion or bruise. Because you didn't cut yourself, the blood from the damaged blood vessels gets trapped under the skin, but as the body heals, the bruise will disappear. There's not much you can do to help the bruise, but you can help the injured area. If you have pain and/or swelling an ice pack will help. Also keep the area elevated if you feel pressure when blood runs down into your leg. You can also rub or massage arnica tincture freely onto bruised area, only if skin isn't broken. And ibuprofen may be taken for pain relief.

A contusion is a deep bruise. Time heals all wounds.

It's basically a bruise. Put ice on it to reduce the swelling. The cold will also constrict the vessels more. Don't use heat, that will make the vessels expand and it'll get worse.
