I have read something about that on here before but, can't remember what was said.

She does it on a daily basis at least five times (just when I am home at night)...I'm not sure what is going on...should I get this checked out?

This could be a collapsed trachea. It is very important, when you walk your dog, to have the leash connected to a harness and not the collar, you don't want extra tugging on the trachea. These little guys tends to have a weak trachea anyway, so they are extra fragile.

Call your vet for an exam to see if that is it. Good luck.

BTW - there could be other causes for the coughing. There is heart disease, intestinal parasites or even heartworm. Please call your vet!

Oh that poor little thing. Small dogs can have a bone in their throat area that is sensitive and can cause spasms. Next time your at the vet mention it. In the mean time make sure the collar isnt too tight and think about options to leash walking. I know what its like to worry about this stuff, dogs can't tell you what the problem is, you have to guess and it can be frustrating. Good luck with it and hug that precious bundle for me!

I know that small dogs have a small trachea/windpipe and sometimes that happens. I would check with the vet just to make sure she doesn't have something stuck down there, swelling or a tumor or something else going on. If it's just a small trachea, I'm not sure what they can do for it if anything. Good luck to you and your yorkie!
I found a website on collapsed traches for you: http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/toyarticle1.htm

best rule of thumb for going to the doctor.
ask yourself if you were gagging at least five times a day ( that is the number you know , could be more ) would you go see a doctor? I know I would.
as for gagging could be an indication of a heart problem.

I've experienced this with 6 dogs: chi, chi/mixed, cocker/basset mixed, yorkie, pomeranian, and another chi.

I took my dog for the vet for it and she said that it looks like breathing problems. I'd take her to get looked at. All the dogs that I have noticed experiencing this, it usually happens after eating or drinking or active play. It's probably breathing problems, but go get her looked at to be on the safe side.

My little dog does this after she drinks her water. My husband and I think that she's just drinking her water too fast. But maybe I should to get mine checked out!

Sounds like reverse sneezing. It is common in small dogs, Massage her throat gently or hold your fingers over her nose until she breaths through her mouth. I know its an awful sound but dont worry its not serious. If it starts to wake her up at night though you should go and see the vet. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/reverse-sneezing-in-dogs/page1.aspx

Yes! Some Yorkies have a collapsed treculia. (I don't remember exactly what it is called).

If you walk her, you should use a harness not her collar.
