I'm not 100% sure of how the handicap ratings are worked out, obviously if a horse wins, and by a long way, he gets put up in the weights.

Handicap ratings, and therefore the weight allocated, only apply in handicap races. In most other races horses carry the same weight as each other, with the exception of the weight for age allowance, where younger horses get to carry a little less than their older competitors; and the sex allowance, where the fillies/mares carry less weight than the colts/geldings.

The handicappers aim is to get all horses in a race to finish in a line - I know this never happens, but that is the aim! If a horse wins a handicap by a long way he has improved more than the handicapper anticipated.

To tell if a horse is well handicapped you need to look at it how well it did in its last race and how much weight he was carrying compared to now. Some trainers, like Sir Mark Prescott, will run a horse to get a handicap rating, and if they believe the horse is better than the allotted rating will run the horse in quick sucession over a period of a week or two - providing the horse is up to it. These are the horses you want to look out for, so watch the entries on the Racing Post website, and keep an eye on Sir Mark's runners!

Handicap ratings are reassesed once every 14 days or so, so you need to be quick to take advantage of a horse that is ahead of the handicapper.

Every racehorse has an Official Rating. The British Horseracing Board employ skilled people to work out what each and every horse is rated at. Basing their ratings on their own opinions, these Official Handicappers decide having watched a horse run at a particular course, over a certain distance and in a time on the days going what its Official Rating should be. By rating every horse this will determine which horses will run against which and should make the races more competitive. There is no point in having a race where the result is a forgone conclusion. This then attracts the bookmakers to compile odds on the race to encourage the punter to have a bet and thus the BHB will collect the resulting levy from the bookmaker

Remember, no matter what anyone tells you, horse racing is somewhat of a racket.
If you really want to learn handicapping, pay the extra admission costs to sit in the clubhouse where bigwigs sit and LISTEN to what's said around you.
Not just the everyday blabbering about I think Big Jerk is gonna win and I feel #5 Bob Loblaw's gonna take it, I mean LISTEN to the subtle comments about weights and tips and who knows who and injuries and which horse had his face in the feed bucket 30 minutes before post and how Big Sausage was humping Little Miss Givener only an hour ago.
This is where you can pick up a lot of tips and information.
Horse Racing is a business like any other and they don't want to give you money back! Even if they gotta scam a little here and there.
Oh sure, you hear the odd time about how the jockey named Dewey Cheatum has been fined for whipping too hard but that's nothing compared to the things you don't hear.
All in all, the handicappers are often guys who spend their time hanging around the barns and looking at pony meat and picking up tips, so they do ok 'capping the colts', but do you not think that he wants to make a few bucks on the side too?
So he tells you about practice times and stuff that you waste your time thinking it's meaningful, but do you think he tells you about how he heard about a certain jockey who's gonna 'hold the horse back' just a little and keep him in 2nd or 3rd? Why? Because the jock secretly has his buddy betting his cash on another speedball that will win at 15-1 if he can only keep his horse in 2nd or third cuz he's the only one that Mr. 15-1 can't beat? Or the trainer or owner knows if his horse can win then he will get into a Stakes race and then he can sell the horse for $60,000 more than it's worth?
You think I'm kidding but I'm not.
It's a racket and the only way you can consistently win is think of it that way and play the game right along side the others.
