This man who I work with (different depts) has asked me to have dinner with him via e mail, he said he would buy. The problem is I'm not at all interested in a romantic relationship. I am 30, he is 50. This all started because we had read the same book and discussed it. We began talking occasionally and one time ate together in the work cafeteria. That is it! I simply thought we had similar interests in books, business, etc. How do I nicely reply to this man's e mail.

Tell him the truth and tell him what you have told us.
You would like to be his friend but you are not interested in dating.
He will appreciate your honesty instead of "beating around the bush".

There really is no easy and nice way to reject someone. It is going to hurt no matter what. The best way to do so is say something on the line of, "You are really nice, kind, and polite and I am sure there is a woman lucky enough to eventually have you, but I don't see you anything more than just a friend."

If he eventually have a problem with that then he is the one with the issues and not you. You have the right to date and reject anyone you see fit and so does he. Make sure you notify your supervisor where you work just in case he decides to harrass and case problems in the workplace.

Tell him that while you enjoy discussing books and similar interests while at work you don't think you'd feel comfortable meeting after work since you only see him as a friend.

Tell him directly.... but nicely... that you just dont want a relationship with him... dont give him false hopes because then it'll just hurt him even more when he finds out form someone else that you dont like him like that.... He's going to feel upset about the rejection no mattet what, but short and brutal is the best was to go when you turn him down....

Hopefully with the truth that usually works, perhaps it's not always the best way at the time but in the long run it's really the only way.
all the best

you can agree to the dinner but state right out that you are not interested in romance so you will pay your own bill. He may just want someone to talk to and not interested in more also but by paying your own bill you are emphasizing that it is a friendship dinner and not a date.

honesty is the best policy...it hurts though(the man) but in the end he'd understand you dont want to be with him like that. instead of going round in circles and the guy thinks u is when u is not....capich

There is no easy way to do this. I guess just tell him you are going steady with someone.
