One time I flew United from Burbank, CA home to Boston with a connection in San Francisco. I had checked in online and printed my boarding pass. But I had to check luggage so I was waiting in line to do that. The airline had told me to arrive at the terminal one hour before my flight, but I arrived 1 hour 45 minutes. It took an hour and 25 minutes to wait in line to check my luggage, despite the fact that I kept telling them that I was going to miss my flight. I was rudely told to wait in line. Of course, by the time I got to the front of the line, they told me I missed my flight. I know for a fact that at least 3 other people missed that flight (and also... it should not take an hour and a half, almost, to check in for a flight). After waiting in another line for 2 hours, they rebooked me from a different airport, and told me I had to take an overnight flight home to Boston and get in the next morning. And that I would have to pay almost $100 to get a shuttle to LAX. Finally, I got the name of the person who was being rude and unhelpful and told her I would file a complaint against her personally (which I did). I got them to pay for the shuttle to LAX and they were at least able to get me on an earlier flight than they first told me. Then, when I finally got to Boston, they lost my luggage. It took 3 days for them to deliver it to me, after they told me it would be less than 24 hours. When I tried calling the lost luggage hotline - because I had no clue where my bag was - the recorded message told me that "all agents are busy, call back later" and it disconnected me.
I fly several times a month - between 80-100 times a year - usually on American or USAirways, and this has never happened to me before. I have flown 3 times on United in the past few years, and have significant problems each time. I've flown several hundred times on other airlines and have never had any significant problems (except for a 2-3 foot snowstorm in Boston a couple years ago, when I was flying USAirways, and it was handled very professionally... they went above and beyond what they needed to).
So, I will not be flying United again. I will stick with USAirways and American.

One time on Northwest my flight was so delayed because of snow that I missed my connection and had to overnight in lovely Detroit Michigan.
The very generous airlines have a policy that states that if your flight is delayed do to weather they do NOT have to pay for your hotel. When I got to detroit airport I had to go find a hotel and all the nice ones were sold out already because alot of people were in the same spot. So I had to stay in some flea bag hote lnear the airport. The hotel screwed up my wake up call which was suppose to be at like 430am and I missed my flight the next morning also. I couldnt get on another flight until like 5pm that day. So I had to hang around detroit airport all day. Unlike the City itself, Detroit airport was quite nice.
What bugged me themost about the situation was how horrible the customer service was at Northwest during the whole experiece. Not one person I dealt with was helpful or seemed to care one bit. I still fly them though as I hope that was just one bad isolated incident.

I wouldn't call this a nightmare, but rather an inconvenience. American Airlines lost my luggage one time. It was, however delivered to me the next day. Yeah, I'd fly American again. Of all the flying I've done, I've actually flown with them the most and that is the one and only things that has ever went wrong with them

A few years ago I was flying BA from Jo'burg to London and sat next to a man who was going to England to identify his daughters bodies after a famous Lifeboat disaster in which his wife, daughters and The lifeboat men who tried to rescue them died, He was p*ssed out of his face and was sick and shouting all the way (understandably), there was also 2 drunken Germans singing we wish you a merry Xmas all the way, The Main air steward was beaten up the night before and as the flight took off Xmas eve and arrived Xmas day the flight was fairly empty so the staff gave us the booze trolleys to help ourselves. I Got chatted up by a sleazy Italian who left chewing gum on my seat which ruined my suit. What a flight!
