Science in one sense refers to any system of objective knowledge.
Science in another refers to a system of acquiring knowledge based on the scientific method.
The major lines of Science are:
applied science which includes
Natural sciences, the study of natural phenomena
Social sciences, the study human behaviour and societies
pure science which includes
Formal science, the study of Mathematics.
Scientists never claim absolute knowledge of nature or the behaviour of the subject of the field of study.
whereas
Religion is codified beliefs and rituals that involve a faith and belief in a spiritual nature and usually includes inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom which are supposed to provide insight to human life.
Religion usually focuses on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or an object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth.
Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, traditions, and rituals are often associated with the core belief.
Religious leaders claim to know Everything.
See? completely different! One involves looking at the world and trying to explain it. The other involves believing and accepting everything an explanation of everything based on Faith and what our ignorant ancestors thought.
Several people have suggested that believing in Darwin's work or in Evolution is a religion. One of the reasons this confusion came about, was because of Social Darwinism, which has little to do with Darwin, but more to do with Herbert Spencer, Thomas Malthus, and Francis Galton, the founder of eugenics. Darwin distanced himself from social Darwinism in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. Darwin at the end of his life was an Agnostic, but he wasn't an Atheist.
Also if Evolution was a religion it would be listed here: http://www.adherents.com/Na/i_e.html and it isn't.

When I hear the likes of Al Gore and other proponents of the global warming argument, or the darwinists out there, I believe (there's that word again) that science has become a religion, of sorts, to many who either are too lazy or incapable of examining the evidence and seeking the truth for themselves.

Well if you are including Evolution, then yes. I personally do not include Evolution with Science b/c it violates the laws of science.
But Evolution is a religion. I requires a great deal of faith to believe in it and it deals with the origin of life. This is why.

Only if you worship science which apparently some people do.
I think I could make a case for either way actually, but it would just be how I feel. MG

No, it's not, and it ought not to be.
At the risk of repeating myself, religious truth and scientific proofs are very different, and the standards of one should never be applied to the other.
Attempts to conflate them only result in bad science and bad religion.

Science is in business to PROVE things. If it can't physically prove something to be then it's nothing.
Except with Evolution. Now that's a religion if there ever was one!
