i wasn't the owner of a car i was driving. i got ticketed for not having insurance. i was told i could get the ticket corrected if i got insurance for the car...IT'S NOT MY CAR!!!

i tried to get the person to get insurance but their car got totaled and they scrapped it...so i got stuck with a $700 ticket.

was wondering if there is anything i could have done in court to be excluded for paying the ticket? or does it not matter, if the car is uninsured who ever is driving has a responsibility to pay???

It sounds like the Police ran the registration and learned that the car was uninsured. That meant that you were driving an uninsured (and likely unregistered) vehicle.

As a driver of any vehicle it is you are responsible for your actions and accidents so, before you borrow the car, one of your questions to the registered owner should be 'am I covered by your policy?' unless you have your own auto insurance (which would then kick in for the borrowed car).

It sounds like you didn't ask or assumed the wrong thing.

The way you wrote your question makes it sound like the matter is closed. If not, you may want to take this to court and see if the judge will reduce your fine. You also likely got some brownie points against your license that you may be able to reduce.

You should also talk to your friend that mousetrapped you into the problem. In advertently or not, that persons failure to buy insurance contributed to your problem.

Worst case: You learned an expensive lesson.

Best Case: It was not nearly as expensive as if you had discovered all this after an accident.

You shouldn't be driving a car that doesn't have insurance. You are responsible for doing that. You need to take responsibility for your own actions. If you don't want to be stuck with a ticket, then get your own car and insure it yourself, rather than depending on someone else.

Whomever owns the car should carry insurance, and that insurance should cover anyone that they give permission to drive that doesn't live in their household. If the owner doesn't have insurance then there is nothing that can be done. You should have made sure the car was insured before driving it.

Yes unfortunately you have a responsibility for the ticket because you were the one driving the car. Tickets are given to drivers not cars...

Unless you own an insured wehicle, and your own insurance covers you driving someone elses car, I think you are stuck. Sorry.
