It stands for Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Test. It allows them to gage which MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) you would be best suited for.

The ASVAB is basically the SAT for the military. It tests your knowledge in many different areas, seeing where you strengths and weaknesses are. This helps the determine what MOS's you would be best suited for. You will get an overall score, as well as many different line scores in the specific areas.

If you score very high in the the technical areas, they will attempt to place you in those fields, as that will best utilize your strengths. Ultimately, if you score high, you can choose what you want to do, but they will try to get you into those fields that require higher scores. If you have a very high technical score, they don't want to make you a cook. Nothing against the cooks, but they don't want to waste your intelligence. But, if you have you heart set on being a cook, they will let you.

I always tell people who score very high on the ASVAB to make the recruiter work to get you in. Make them get you the MOS you want. If the recruiter will not, go to a different office, or try a different branch.

The asvab has many sections, each testing a different area of knowledge or skill to provide an assessment of worthiness for military service, and to place you in the military job for which you are qualified.

It is a test to determine your strengths and weaknesses. If you score extremely high in technical side it would be a waste of your talents to place you as an administration position.
