if someone is convicted as a pedophile, how many years does that person have to be in jail?

I'm doing a research paper on what should be done to pedophiles, and what is the appropriate punishment for them. I've looked up on this, and the years range from about 10-16 years in jail. Does anyone know the exact number of years? What if they are convicted for sexually abusing a child more than once?

.A lot of them don't even go to jail. They get what's called deferred adjudication in stead of jail. I read an article in Oprah magazine that told how relatives molesting their own kids often get counseling with no punishment! Find a back issue, I believe September or October of the mag if you want to read a good article about it.

Each state has their specific "sentencing guidelines" concerning convictions of specific offenses.

Most convictions have a range established at a minimum and maximum time to be served.

It is the Judges descretion at the "sentencing hearing" to weigh the circumstances involved during the commission of the crime that made it more severe than similar cases. For instance a robbery committed with a knife versus a handgun. One event is more severe than the other therefore the Judge could sentence to more years for possessing the gun than he would the knife.

i do not know but i think that the system is way way way way to lenient on these people after one charge they should get at least 30 years if not 50 if you rape and kill a child i think the approate punishment should be to lock this pervert in a room with the victoms family and that would be fair it is time to punish these perverts and send a message that violent acts on children will be harsh and long long long they should also be removed from society once there out and put under constant survalance like a chip or unremovable band so that they couldn't ever get close enough to another child again and these people (if you can call them that) should never get a second chance to hurt a child the first time they should get put away long enough so that when they get out there to old to hurt another child.

there isn't an exact number of years. i saw on the news that a man just got 150 yrs. as far as i'm concerned, life isn't enough.
