Any filing status can claim a dependent child.

This is often confused with the fact that in order to file as Head of Household, you normally have a dependent child. But you can have a dependent child and file single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or qualifying widow(er).

No. It depends on how long the child lived with you for the year. I mean are you divorced or married to the child's mother? If the child lived with you for at least six months out of the year you can claim the child; but if the child lived with someone else the rest of the year you need to make sure they know that you are claiming the child for 6 months. You can do the claim as head of household or you can file jointly with your spouse.
