Is it dangerous to stand in front of a microwave when you're waiting for your food to be heated?

No. If you notice the microwave has a screen in the glass. The diameter of the mesh is smaller than the wave length of the (micro) wave, hence the radiation never escapes. You can prove this by looking in back of the machine and finding the frequency of the wave generated in Hz and divide it by the speed of light. This will yield the wavelength generated by the magnetron. This wavelength will be a little larger than the mesh diameter.

This is illustrative of an elegant physics solution. Just make the holes small enough such that the larger waves cannot get out.

It depends on the type of microwave. Most microwaves are fairly good, but the really old ones pump out so much energy at diffrent frequencies that they can inductively light a light bulb (held in your hand in front of the microwave).

They say it's not. But who knows... During an experiment my mobile was ringing out loud from a microwave. Of course the microwavelength is 120mm and GSM wavelength is 0.33mm so the shield is much more effective for microwaves than for GSM but the microwave power is also higher.
