Is a dog a substitute for love from other humans ? Do you think lack of parental love causes them to find it elsewhere? How old are these people that dress their dogs? Are they what others call Fur-Babies?

I couldn't agree with Greekman more. What a great statement!!!

I do not treat my dogs like babies. They are dogs and are treated as such, now don't get me wrong I train them and play with them and I enjoy it but most times they have to earn whatever it is they want. I am the boss in my house where the dogs are concerned and there is no confusion.
For a lot of people I think it is a substitute for SOMETHING that may be missing from their lives. I do not even try to figure out where it comes from or why. I gave up. You will be surprised to know that the ages vary for the people that dress their dogs from the very young to the very old and Yes I would say that these are the fur-baby pet owners whose dogs own them.
I think putting a coat on a dog that really has no coat is okay and is necessary but for the others.....

I think some kids do turn to a pet as a way to get attention and love. Yes, they do lack feelings or worth from parents that don't have time for them. I don't care if others agree or not I have seen it first hand. Most of the people are about 8 years old who dress up their dogs as dolls. However, thanks to people like Paris Hilton many more and older people are doing it now. I dressed my dog when I was a little girl. Furbabies are those that cant tell the difference between an animal and human. They believe the dog should have civil rights and next they will be wanting them to vote.

I treat my 6 month old Bichonpoo like a baby because she is a baby. She wears sweatshirts or sweaters when it gets cold because she is only 7 pounds and I wouldn't want her to get a chill. But like any young child she gets a healthy amount of discipline. She is a real sweetheart; happy, healthy and well-behaved. She is cute and knows it but she still respects me and listens to me. Yes, she is my fur-baby. As to your age question I am 45 years old and never had human children so in a way she is a child substitute.

The family unit isn't what it used to be..Years ago people were surrounded and raised by both parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors...Marriages also lasted then ..Today you are lucky to have 1 or 2 people in your life, and with a 50% divorce rate now, its no wonder the rate of dog owners is soring...People want to give and receive unconditional love, and dogs are the perfect candidates..With people caring more for their pets, we are beginning to open our eyes to the abuse and neglect animals are subjected to, and we are starting to take a stand on protecting God's creatures...We need to fight for tougher laws to help not only dogs and cats but all animals...As for the dressing of dogs, if my dogs let me I would but they hate it..I think if the dog needs a sweater in winter its cute...I don't know how I feel about dressing them up everyday in outfits, but to each their own...

No, I had plenty of parental love and I love dogs and yes I do treat my dog like a baby and I sometimes to dress him and I am 42, so I don't see what the big deal is, it's just that some of us love our pets and think of them as children, instead of just dogs. That's something someone who isn't a true animal (especially dog) lover can't ever understand.

Well, when I get the question about when my husband and I are going to have another baby (we have an almost 4 year old daughter), we say we already have one, and she's our 40lb 7 month old pup.

But we do treat our dog like a dog as well. She's trained, knows to listen to our commands. The only things that are not to "dog" is that she is an indoor dog (we got her while living in an apt, now we live in a house, and well she's already used to living inside). I don't put her in clothes (I think it looks pretty ridiculous on a bigger dog). But she does sleep on our bed (but at our feet).

I do treat my dogs like they are babies . I have a 3lb chi (thats mine) and I foster a belgian malinos puppy whoweighs 16 lbs right now . I dress my chi up and I am 46 yrs old . It has nothing to do with age you see .it is all in how you look at your pets .

I don't call them fur-babies, I call them my-babies. They are indoor dogs, even at 38 pounds, 51 pounds and 51-55 pounds. They sleep in my bed. I do not dress them up. They aren't a substitute for love from other humans but your love for them and their devotion to you matters just as much really.

All ages dress their pets.

My dogs do get over on me a lot. They are my babies and I just like them better than most people.
