It's been on the news recently that lots of people's homes were put into the wrong band, therefore they would have been paying too much council tax for years.

The honest answer is that you probably wont as the VO do not want their office swamped with queries and also when refunds are given they come directly from the council, who is the collection agent of the government. The council used the money over the years to fund amenities within their area. If they have to give it back then the funding would be so reduced that services would plummet - I know its unfair but at the end of the day the Government have made this mess and are now expecting the Councils to sort it out

Go to www.voa.gov.uk

Somewhere on there you can enter your postcode and it should tell you how much other houses in that area are paying, and then if you're paying something different, you need to write to your local listing officer to make a claim. You can find out who that is from the above website as well.

I would start with your neighbours who are living in similar type of property as yours. If you know one who is on friendly terms with you, you can ask what band they are in. If you are in a higher band, ask yourself, why? Do you have an extension, conservatory, etc. If there is no difference, you are paying too much, probably.
