Each individual has to make the decision how "healthy" they want to be. Drugs are only one of many issues.

Why do obese people continue eating when it's obvious they should lose weight for their heart's sake?

Why do we do anything that's "bad?"

If we were totally health-conscious, we'd all be drinking spring water and eating a ball of twine.

Many of life's pleasures aren't necessarily the healthiest, but we do them because we like how they make us feel.

The real question here, is why some people have a sense of moderation and self-control and others are just self-destructive?

You've heard the old adage about alcoholism? "One drink is too many and a hundred is not enough?"

Some folks either don't have or refuse to have any sense of moderation.

I dated a guy in the past who was a regular pot smoker and his parents used too. I know exactly what you mean. Whenever we worked out, the guy was way out of breath before me. Once, I spent the night on his parents couch and for an hour the next morning I could hear his father upstairs coughing and hacking. It was horrible! And then his dad lit up a joint & passed it around when he came downstairs. I asked my guy why they were like this, and all he could say was "I don't know". I believe people who are like this have a low self esteem. They don't care about the consequences, they want to feel better now. It's a vicious cycle. I tried to get the guy to quit, but he'd have a rotten day & just wanted one hit. It's sad, it's self destructive, and they really don't care about themselves.

You never had someone come up to you in school and say...."You gotta try this....it's awesome. No one will know....everyone's doing it...don't be a drag", etc etc etc.???????

I'm 42 and I was getting that when I was in the 8th grade. Now kids are getting that in the 4th grade and earlier. How can anyone that age refuse peer pressure?? Not many. And it just continues for years and years. If you can say no.....good for you. Then work with others to get the word out. Lead by example.
