There are certain things our taxes pay for that we can't afford to pay for ourselves.
We are a society that for the most part (there are those out there this doesn't apply to - known as the exceptions to the rule) we would spend all that we made - thus the credit card crisis and debt crisis we have in this country. WE, as a society would continue to live beyond our means - and I believe that we have personalities that would not think of things like health insurance, and retirement first. I don't think it's right that our priorities are out of whack, just stating a fact.
My generation, and the generation before me especially (and let's not even think about those behind me) - we live beyond our means and think that we will do for our retirement tomorrow, unfortunetly, as appealing as your idea sounds, I just see it as a disaster, as WE with our human nature, we can't handle it.

Nothing would change. If it's not an income tax, which is progressive by the way, it would be something else such as a regressive sales or, worst yet, property tax.
I might get a bit more in my paycheck, but the massive increase in costs would offset that in a New York minute.
With a national sales tax, tax fraud would be rampant as transactions would occur "off the books" to avoid taxation. A significant underground crimminal element would be spawned for the trade in un-taxed goods -- just look at what's already happening with bootleg liquor and tobacco. Who needs that crap??

Hiring a cop and paving the road to your house will be expensive; so will salting an icy road.
Government services will always have to be paid for. Alternative tax systems are not going to make that go away; just change the burden on who pays for what.

Your quality of life would definitely not improve. The highways would deteriorate so much, you would not be able to drive on them. No education, no housing or food for the poor. So they would come steal yours. The list goes on and on.

Your paycheck would be bigger, sure, but you'd have to pay for many services out of your own pocket that are now funded by this federal with holding, and it likely would cost you considerably more in time and money.
