and in local police stations in can be anything from Sargent to chief inspector.

In the Metropolitan Police the boundaries of the police areas follow those of the local boroughs. The main police station within the borough is the 'head' of that division and is called the 'Borough Commander'. Usually hold the rank of Chief Superintendent. So there are ranks and roles involved with the 'head'.

If it is an area office, usually and Inspector. A Divisional Headquarters will have a Chief Superintendent and the Regional/ Force Headquarters will have the Chief Constable. All are Station Commanders of their own stations.
