My dog humped my boyfriend's leg last night when I wasn't at home. She has NEVER humped before, and she's a year old, and fixed. I thought it might be dominance, but he said it's almost as if she looked like she couldn't control it. He did scold her in the proper way. I was just wondering why she would do that. Other answers I found only dealt with dominance being the issue. I am very much so the pack leader, and my boyfriend has already established his role over her. Serious answers only, please.

it is most definately dominance. your dog wants to gain control over your boyfriend. good for you, also, for being the pack leader! Everyone else I try to tell in an answer gets confused or has no idea what i'm talking about.

getting back to the dog issue, always correct her when she does so. i'm so glad you know about that, too. i feel so much better now that i've heard someone who knows as much about dogs as me!

It is a common misconception that when a dog "humps" someones leg or another object that it is as a result of sexual stimulation. Actually, it is a reflex action that many dogs "enjoy" if presented with an object of the right size and shape. It also can be an act of dominace. The sex drive may increase the activity in some cases, but spaying or castrating won't always stop this behavior. Removing items or situations that cause this behavior is the best prevention.
A good way to discourage this is get a squirt bottle of water and when she does this squirt her in the face and firmly say No.

I don't know what scolding the proper way is - because any sort of scolding isn't proper.

When faced with this situation - because it strictly IS a dominance issue - you tell her to sit and then down. Keep her in down until YOU or HE tells her to get up. That could be in 15 min - 2 hours. Having her in down is having her submit.

A few times enforcing this rule and she'll stop the humping.

I have a friend who I house sit for who owns a 100lb Weimeriener and he has a humping problem. I had to tell him to down twice and I've never EVER had any problems since. That was over a year ago.

Good Luck

She is testing the waters to see if you or he is really in charge and still the leader. They do that. Some dogs more than others.
This is the way thing function in nature. If a lesser dog wants to be top dog they fight to take over control of the pack. If a lesser dog wants to move up in pack order they fight or dominat the dog they are moving up over.
Your dog is testing your BF to see if she can move up her pack rank over his.
