As far I know, if the person is not working in night shifts etc, it is a clear sign of depression. In depression, the person faces difficulty in falling asleep, and the sleep, if there is any, is not really refreshing. The person then wakes up early in the morning , at about 3 to 4 am . Naturally, not sleeping enough at night will compel him to feel sleepy in the day. The best course open for such a person is to consult a physian, and try to have as relaxed life style as far as possible. It is clinically prooved, however, that the depression, if present, will automatically wane, at the most , within 3 to 6 months.

There's no side effects.
I've worked nights (7p-7a, 7 nights on/7 nights off) for 4 years now.
I stay on a night shift schedule during my week off. There are 24hr grocery stores and pharmacies. If you talk about a social life, parties don't get started until late anyway. I love staying awake at night and sleeping during the day. I would go crazy with the chaos of the world during the day. I love my peace and quiet.
There are increased incidences of certain medical conditions that night shifters have, but as long as you stay healthy and take care of yourself, it's no different than anything else.

A fair number of people do this by choice - nurses, police officers - for their entire careers and suffer no ill effects. It's called "Workin' the graveyard shift."

No, as long as you have the proper amount of sunlight (this is more important than you think) it doesn't matter what time you sleep, as long as it is consecutive.
