If you have a dependent child and have income to report, then the amount of refund depends on the amount of income. If your income only from wages is below approximately $15,000, then you are assured of a refund ranging from zero up to approximately $3,400.
The refundable credit for having a dependent child (the Earned Income Credit) starts at zero for zero income, reaches a maximum for income between about $8,000 to $15,000, and then decreases to zero at income of $32,000.
At income over approximately $32,000, you no longer will receive the refundable credit for a child (the Earned Income Credit), and you will owe taxes. Your refund will depend on how much withholding has already been paid.
