If he is under 12 wks, yes. As with most stitches, it takes 7-10 days to heal.
The dog will be under anesthesia during the procedure and given pain meds directly after (only at your request). Anytime a dog is put under anesthesia, there are risks, so discuss that with your vet. The cropping itself, yes, there is minimal pain or discomfort after the procedure.
If kept clean and the dog is kept from scratching the stitches out, within 2 wk you're done!
(I raise dobermans, and there is ALOT more involved, because they are a larger breed and the posting process can get tedious. With a smaller breed, I'm not sure if posting is even necessary.)

As the owner of Giant Schnauzers, I opt not to crop. The operation itself is not painful, but the trouble with posting afterwards is a total pain in the butt. You have to watch for infection, and some dogs take 2 weeks to heal and their ears to stand, others can take a year! Then you have to worry if the ears are standing correctly, and are the correct length.
Plus, ear cropping has to be done before they are 3 months old.
Personally, I would leave them alone.

Hi Shebby79!!
The AKC does not require that a Miniature Schnauzer's ears be cropped!!!! Cropping is often performed on breeds used for guarding as the dog appears more ferocious with cropped ears than it does with naturally hanging ears, but it is atrocious.
Its an absolutely horrible thing to do to your mini Schnauzer pup.
Its painful, unnecessary, archaic, atrocious and should be banned in America the way it is in the rest of the world.
At 8 to 12 weeks old when the pup is at a crucial stage of development. I still maintain its a completely unnecessary, aesthetic and brutal treatment.
The decision is yours but just think,,,, and make sure you see examples of this vet's work before you let him/her crop your dog's ears.

On a 5 month old, this is cruel. I'd change vets as I can't believe that any legit vet would do this. If your dog is having recurring ear infections, you need to get better at cleaning his ears and change foods. Food allergies are a HUGE cause of ear infections. Natural Balance Duck & Potato is my fav allergy food, especially for small dogs. At 5 months old, the chances are slim that the ears will ever stand up. The cartilage is almost completely formed and solid. Yes, splints and taping are done post-surgery to help shape the cartilage, but they arent magic. And since this dogs ears aren't exactly that of an 8 week old's, you'll be fighting nature.

The bottom line that the procedure is a cosmetic mutilation. It serves no significant purpose for a pet. The animal will be anesthetized and will be given analgesics and antibiotics, but it will not be pain free for you puppy.
While spaying/neutering or declawing can have health benefits for an animal, ear cropping doesn't. When responsibly done I don't think the procedure is wrong, but I see absolutely no reason to perform it on a pet. Heck, dogs are cuter with full ears anyway! My advice? Invest your time and money in something more worthwhile.

Ear cropping is horrible, purely cosmetic, and all about the egomania of the owner. Why would you inflict the pain and risk of infection involved in elective surgery on an animal the really couldn't give a crap about how cool cropped ears look?

Short answer, no. Cropping a dogs ears is done purely for cosmetic reasons, it has no functional purpose. It is quite a process and healing takes a while. Discuss it with your vet if you want to know the procedure but all cropping has been banned where i live in Western Australia, it can only be done if deemed necessary for a legitimate medical reason (though i cant think of many). Im sure your dog is gorgeous just how it is :)

Personally I wouldn`t have them done. I had a doberman and had his done.He was in pain and uncomfortable. Now I have a pit-bull and didn`t do his. My vet of 20 something years says if you aren`t going to use the dog as a show dog then don`t because it is very painful for the dog.

No. Schuazers look best with their ears.. And it is a very painful thing to do. But, unlike what the first person said, they dog should be neutered.

HI
No, they are fine just the way they are also some are getting a ban on cropping the ears and docking the tails. Some organizations are trying to make this illegal.
