Pat - It costs not a thing to believe in God or for Him to be your friend. His amazing grace is absolutely free. This I do truly believe. MG

You are better than just a "Friend of God". You are a child of God. Made in his image. Just like with any parent, you are to love, trust and obey.
One thing I don't understand about non believers....
Why do people only pick out the things that you aren't allowed to do??
The 10 commandments are things that we all should follow reguardless of religion. Stealing, adultry, murder etc. The Bible teaches us to love one another, respect each other, be giving and honorable. What is wrong with that? And we all know that if you break one of the 10 commandments, there is a consequence. And none of the consequences are good for us.
Of course we are all Human, but God knows that. He isn't expecting us to be perfect because he didn't make us perfect. We all have struggles in life no matter how great or how small. All God wants us to do is to lean on him for the strength to make our selves better. We are not to look toward the material things here on earth because as we all know, these things don't last. We are to seek out the spiritual things in life......

According to my teacher, Srila Prabhupada, one can become a freind of God by becoming a freind to those that He loves. That means every living entities. Not that we are kind to someone in our race or faith, and then eat cows and cut down Christmas trees. The more we become a servant, of the servant, of the servant of the Lord, the more the Lord loves us. The more we dedicate ourselves toward our own spiritual advancement, and then helping to facilitate the spiritual progress of others, the more the Lord is pleased with us.
It is described that the cowherd boys of Vrndavana, had to perform millions of pious activities in order to become the intimate friend of Lord Krishna (God). According to the Teachings of Lord Caitanya, it is explained,
"In the third stage, called sakhya-rati, transcendental love is developed, and one associates with the Supreme on an equal level of love and respect. As this stage is further developed, there is joking and such relaxed exchanges as laughing and so on. On this level there are fraternal exchanges with the Supreme Person, and one is free from all bondage. At this stage one practically forgets his inferior position as a living entity, but at the same time he has the greatest respect for the Supreme Person."

God loves the world. He desires relationship with us. We need to believe in Him(Jesus) for salvation,He gave us His all,we should give no less.(that's called Grace & mercy) But, the more you study the bible, you will see the many attributes of God.Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you into all Truths. The closer you come to God, the more you WANT to follow Him and serve Him.
Abraham was called a friend of God as he believed & obeyed & trusted God.
Seek with all your heart & soul & you WILL find! Peace

If you married someone you love, that person would want a full commitment. I don't think that your spouse would agree to the marriage and allow you to have several others who you would be sexually involved with too.
So too, with God. In the very first commandment, found in Exodus 20:3, God tells us, “You shall have no other gods before Me." To answer your question then, it takes everything - a total surrender of self to be a friend of God's, anything less is not a full commitment.
Jesus tells us, if you love me, keep my commandments.

It only takes a spark (read desire) to get the fire is going.
The more you want to be a friend of God the more you become. 'cause God will make you a better friend each day.
In India there is a saying that the more a pin stays close to a magnet the more magnetized it becomes. It is just like that - friendship with God.

In actuality, you don't have to be perfect. If you were, you wouldn't need to be friends with God, right? I can only speak from my own Christian faith, but being a friend of God begins with admitting that you don't have it all together, acknowledging that there is something going on far bigger than us and that you have been created for a purpose. In reality, it costs you the world though. It doesn't mean you drop everything else, but it does mean that you interpret the rest of your life in the context of your faith.

It's probably not a popular notion, but I think we're already "friends" of God. That said, it's always nice to keep the lines of communication open -- that is, through prayer.
I don't make a big deal of prayer; just convey my gratitude to God for my life, think about concerns, think about good times, bad times... I don't consider "prayer" as something that has to be formal.

No time. Friendship works from both side. He is already there for you, and waiting for you to response.
New International Version (NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

God made you, he owns you.
He created you to worship him, not so he can hang with you. All he wants is 100% obedience, not friendship.
Your approach to God is wrong you need some serious bible study, you sound as if you are thinking of him as an equal. You are on dangerous ground, get off it before it takes you to hell.
