It is a famous quote, I know, but I have been reflecting upon it. All to frequently I have seen messages of goodwill on this site (and in the world at large) slandered by cynics and malefactors who seem to take great pleasure in their own aggression.

Why is the world like this? If equality and peace are far-flung, romantic dreams, can't people at least learn politeness and how to be more reasonable? It seems to me that the world is becoming increasingly full of too many mouths talking, and not enough ears listening.

Does anyone agree- or even understand what I'm trying to get at (my grammatical skills leave a lot to be desired, I know)

i understand you perfectly
and i agree
sometimes people just like the sound of their own voice ... and learn nothing about others because they close themself to anything outside of themself
an ear is all people need at times
and if you cant listen to someone without being rude ... then dont say anything at all , just by pass the question

That's quite an easy one to answer:

Blaise Pascal: "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

All it requires is a belief that one is doing a good or just a necessary thing. And then, in pursuit of truth, gentleness and kindness can be seen as secondary virtues, or even encumbrances. The more important the truth is seen to be, the less room there seems to be for being wishy-washy or compromising about it. And "uncompromising" can slide over into rude and aggressive very easily.

I see that as an error, but an understandable one when you can find in the bible that Jesus said “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth, I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

So, butterflies do get broken on wheels.
And an accusation levelled at the Christian church is that it "shoots its own wounded." (Google the quoted expression!) The most damaging "breaking" of all: not coming from your enemies, but those you thought should be your friends.

It seems you are asking for too much. The world will always be full of people who will never be even polite, we're not talking about goodness here. And as much as I would like to see that happen, I know it won't, so I don't worry too much about it. I am a very sensitive person myself so rudeness really bothers me but then that's fallen human nature - we are not perfect. No one is, even the polite and seemingly good ones. I don't believe the world is ever gonna get a better place to live, it will only go from bad to worse until Jesus comes back to restore everything. Until then, we have to accept the material world as it is and to try to invest into things that will have value in the coming eternity.

Your grammatical skills are just fine. Yes I understand your point. The problem arises because people are not understanding, compassionate or loving by nature. These things are taught. Some never learn the lesson. I am a Christian, and I honestly believe that we are all born with a sinful nature, There is an old adage - you are what you become. In other words, you can hide your flaws to a certain point, but in the end your true colors will emerge.

There is an empty hole in the human heart that, unless filled by God, people will attempt to fill with other things. Greed, desire, lust, and self-importance take over. All of the pretty, glittery things we try to obtain, power, all of it is empty and without any moral, spiritual or lasting worth.

We are living in times of great stress and often people are afraid, life is getting more difficult and all this build up has a profound effect on all of us,we see increased anger in people and frustration, some like to vent this on others, some are so mixed up and pained that they hurt others to make them feel better but it never works.

Someone who is very bored. Sorry i digress, Your important use of the words 'learn politeness' is the key here, many never learn this common courtesy, and without these basic people skills it is hard to feel for , or deal with, everyday events, without resorting to and exposing their ignorance.
