To understand this question we need to see all religions and the way they function. On observing closely we can come to a conclusion that there are basically two type of religions, firstly those which don't have a strictly to be followed document or code and the other which have. But both are based one fundamental basic of defining how people should function. Thus religion was formed to give a code of conduct for all humans to deal with each and every situation. There where many situations which man at that time could understand and hence holds good even today, however there are even more things which man has understood now and hence ammendments are required. Few religions are more adjusting than others but all needs undateing. That will only be understood if man understands the question that is Why was religion ever formed?

Human beings by nature have a natural desire to form into a group
They hate to be lonely
They formed into a cluster , the beliefs of leaders were naturally emulated , copied and as things progressed started to get forced on others
This is how it happened
But when group got recognised over individuals , they started to be called religion sect or what soever

Beginning with the idea that people must, by the nature of their minds, believe something, and considering that people of like beliefs tend to gravitate toward each other, one can easily see the roots of religion. Add to this the human will to power and we have added "priests," who rise to lead those of like belief who have gathered toward the "true" method of living in keeping with those beliefs.
Now, the interesting part: Let us say that an emperor notices that more and more of his people are observing one particular religion. He sees that religion as a very useful way to consolidate his power and declares that religion the official religion of his empire. In so doing he grants more power to the priests, obliging them to support his imperial schemes.
Aren't humans fun?

Religion means the way we live our life.People feel safe with like minded people.
Religion or worship started when the gods and goddesses lost their purity and became unhappy. They began to look for God. First their was only one religion and so there was harmony. Then it was called the Adi Dev Sanatan Dharma. But could not be called that without purity so it was then called Hinduism. They began to worship their own images. Then came Abraham,Buddha and Christ to establish their own religions. Each have own beliefs.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna explains that He created religion, or the laws of God as rules and regulations for us to obey so that we can reform our envious mentality toward Him, which is the reason we chose to leave the spiritual world to suffer our karma that we create for ourselves, here in the material world.. We have free will, so we can choose to serve the Lord in a loving way, which is completely the nature of the soul to do, or we can choose to live in Maya, or illusion, and vainly try to be the Supreme Enjoyer, Controller, Owner and Freind of everything and everyone. T
The word religion comes from the Latin which means "re-ligiare", to bind back man or woman with GOd.
As a flower or branch is a part of a tree, the soul is a tiny part of Krishna, God. When we water the root of the tree, the n all the flowers and branches are nourished, SImilarly, wheen we direct our service attitude toward serving the Lord, the soul becomes peaceful and joyful. When we become like animals, and only think about eating sleeping mating and defending, we perpetuate our fristration, and our stay in this material world, birth after birth.
Out of the Lord's causeless mercy, he gives the principles of religion so that we can become fit for going back to the spiritual world, and leave this nightmare world of birth and death far behind us. TOo often, people utilize religion to become more materially comfortable, without the intention of developing love or service for the Lord. This is a kind of "cheating religion", and has nothing to do with pure devotion to the Lord.
Religion can only be given by the Lord, and His bona-fide representatives. Man, with all of his material conditioning, can never create " a religion". In the name of Allah, Christ, Krishna, etc....so many atrocities have been performed, but that does not make religion "bad". You can hide behind anything that is respectable, to justify vicious behaviour, and totally mis-represent it. A religious person would never be killing to steal the resources of another nation for example, but people who want to be atheists try to use this misuse of religion to say how bad religion is.
The only purpose of religion is to develop love of God, and thus a respect for all of His/Her creation. It has nothing to do with doing "business: with God, and treating God as an order supplier, giving Him our shopping lists for material "goodies". There are symptoms of a religions person, which are rarely seen today , anywhere....merciful, tolerant (forgiving) , a friend to every living entity, one who has no enemies......

It is built in to us to believe in something as an explanation for the beginning and for why we are here. All humans believe in something even if they don't believe in God. This belief could be the M-theory or Big Bang or maybe closer to our time period of time the theory of Macro-evolution. All in all, There is only a small amount of people in the world who don't believe in anything, and are just here waiting to die.
