I would argue they have replaced the word heathen with "liberal."

Some still do, but that's only because they are ignorant of what the word actually means. Heathens are people who practice the Pre-Christian Northern European religion.

Some of them still do. I know several members of my family still refer to everyone who is not a Christian (not a Catholic, to be precise) as a heathen. This upsets the Baptists in my family, who feel that as Christians, they most definitely NOT heathen. This upsets my husband even more as he IS a heathen and resents being considered alongside any Christian.

Since the word means "dwellers on the heath," I suppose it began to seem somewhat inaccurate.
