I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
http://curezone.com/foods/oliveleaf.html
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy: http://www.myvitanet.com/olleafex1ozh.html
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you the WARS I had with these evil sores!
Well, I can finally say: I WON !!!

Abreva is DARN expensive for that stupid little tube you get. Plus, I think Zovirax works better.
If you don't want to go to the doc, try Arbonne's Herbal Lip Ointment to shorten the span of a cold sore and relieve the pain. They also have a vitamin called Lip Service that can help cut down on break outs.
Other things to consider - cold sores, herpes, are a viral infection - they break out when your immune system is weak.. so try to get sleep, exercise, eat well and reduce stress in your life to help limit break outs of cold sores

OTC Abreva! Works like a charm, though it is expensive. Use it according to directions at the first sign of a cold sore- I've gotten rid of them in 1 day!

zovirax works for some but more effective the earlier it is used i.e. before cold sore visible. furthermore only limits the duration of cold sore by 1-2 days
I find cymex really soothing while waiting for them to recover

There is cold sore cream at drug stores, this will treat it, however, cold sores, are a form of herpies. also if you are of age and are having sex, do not perform oral sex, you can pass it on to your partner.

unfortunately once you get the herpes simplex virus you will have it for life and it will come and go. the trick is to read the signs of an oncoming attack and get some cream such as aciclovir which will either stop it in its tracks or reduce the amount of outbreak.
