This phrase is often used as an excuse to listening to biblical reaching.
I understand the sentiment, but the source of this idea, Edgar A. Guest was not speaking of hypocrites.
There is a great need today for "real preaching" to take place. "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe."
1 Corinthians 1:21 Preaching has been replaced in many places by stand-up comedy and boring monologues.

I do see people live the things they preach every day. Lots of good kind and caring people out there.
In fact there are so many good that the not so good seem to stand out. I would think that would be embarrassing for them!

Yes, and I'd also prefer not to hear sermons from rich preachers living a luxurious lifestyle and still wanting some more money from me, a hard working ordinary joe.
