Well, I made an appointment for her to get spayed and the day after Imake it, she goes into heat. Now the vet won't do it until she's done being in heat. The problem is, is that my male cat has already been fixed, but the female won't leave him alone. The male cat has become extremly aggressive with her. Is this normal for the male when a female is in heat, or is he just annoyed that she won't leave him alone. I can't let him out b/c the temp right now is -15, so he's in the basement so he doesn't hurt her. This cat is gonna be in heat for probably a month though before the vet will spay her. What should I do? Just keep them seperated as best I can, or is it normal for the male to act like this and let it be? He's pretty mad already to have to be stuck inside b/c it's so cold. Now with this other cat constantly waiving her butt in his face, he's really pissed off. She doesn't get it that he has no interest in mating.

The first ting I would do is call around to several different vets about having this female spayed. As far as I know, they can be spayed ANYTIME, including right after mating. I cannot imagine, nor have I ever heard of having to wait for a month until she is out of heat. Yes, he is very aggravated by her behavior, as this is a neutered male, and he has NO interest in her *** in his face. Keep them separated to the very best of your ability, as the male cat may get mad enough to actually attack her. If you have a friend or relative who would be willing to keep this female in heat until you can find a vet to spay her, THIS would be your very best option for the health and well-being of BOTH cats, and help YOU keep your sanity. Good luck to you.

It is called his personality. She's driving him a bit crazy. Most vets don't want to spay a cat in heat because it's harder to do. The younger the better, starting at 4 mos. old and they do NOT need to have kittens first...HE also might have a little bit of hormones running around that he can't do too much with. The basement is the best thing right now, with maybe limited contact w/ the female. Also, make time to spend with just him and give him some extra TLC. As long as all body functions behave normally (eating, drinking, peeing), they should be fine to wait it out.

I would call another vet. I have had cats in heat spayed several times. It will cost you more because of the increased blood supply to the uterus at this time. I used to assist a vet and they even spayed aniamls that were pregnant. I live where it is very cold.It was -24 this morning and the one cat that I have which is allowed to go out still went out this morning. He didn't stay out as long as he does at times but he still wanted to go out.The cold is not going to hurt the cat. I do believe in keeping cats inside and out of harms way but this cat dug through our cellar to get out so I figure if he wants to go out on occasion that bad then he will be allowed to. I like to keep them safe but also want them to be happy with life.

I belong to two animal shelters and checked with them as well as my own vet. They all will spay a cat while in heat but not a dog. I'd get a 2nd opinion from another vet in your area. Good luck.
